Imagine a town where some people enjoyed the benefits of electricity – lighting at the flick of a switch and reliable heating regulated by a thermostat – while others lived with smelly kerosene lamps and smoky box stoves.

In New Hampshire, during the first half of the 20th century, residents of developed communities enjoyed the transformative benefits of electric power while those in sparsely populated areas lived and worked in conditions little changed from the 19th century. It took the coming of the New Deal’s Rural Electrification Administration and a determined band of farmers to overcome opposition from the established private utilities to create the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative in 1939. Despite labor and material shortages during WWII, within a decade, power came to almost all of the previously unserved regions of the state. For thousands of households, this meant relief from the drudgery of the wood-fueled cookstove, the washboard and the kerosene lamp. Reliable electric power similarly brought new ways of life to farmers and artisans.

This program will explore how these developments changed civic and social life in New Hampshire’s countryside, and touch on ways the disparity of broadband access in the state echo these earlier struggles.

A lifelong scholar of NH agriculture and rural life, Steve Taylor has been a daily newspaper reporter and editor, freelance writer, dairy farmer and for 25 years served as the state’s Commissioner of Agriculture. He was the founding executive director of the Hampshire Humanities Council and in recent years has actively participated in its Humanities to Go program.

Past Perfect Museum Software

We have started to use our newly acquired software to organize and categorize our collections of artifacts. This is a complex project but we have a dedicated and capable team. Thanks to all members and donor for their financial support that made this possible.

Unfortunately, not all the diaries have been transcribed so we have holes to fill when we get the time. Jumping back to 1908. Think of it as time travel.

1^st June 1908 (Monday)

Fair wind W to NW. cool. David took Hamish to Depot and brought paint, grain &c. Then ploughed at Cowdrey Place a few hours and harrowed in upper field. I bought some stocks – verbenas & Coleus and planted them and sowed some beet, onion and beans. L.M. P. Hardy gone to Topeka today.

2^nd June 1908 (Tuesday)

Fair with cool NW wind moderating in evening. David harrowing in top field and ploughing in Jim Davis field in afternoon. I sowed two rows of beets in incubator field. Got pc from Hamish.

3^rd June 1908 (Wednesday)

Frost killed beans and injured some tomatoes. Warm after. David with W. Hardy ploughed part of Davis field in forenoon and we seeded and harrowed top field in afternoon. I bushed some of my early peas. I wrote brother Bob, and we went down to library in evening. Saw Principal Lewis and
Miss Wilbur and had a talk about Jim.

4^th June 1908 (Thursday)

Cloudy morning warm day. Wind W to North. I drove up with David to Club House in morning with his stock and brought home the wagon Mother and I cleaned brooders and bushed peas. I afternoon Jim and I rolled top field and sowed two rows of carrots in garden. Saw brambleberry in bloom for first time this year.

5^th June 1908 (Friday)

Fine day warm with cool NE to SE wind. David and G. Sargent at Club House painting. I walked up in the morning with D’s paint brush, and putty knife, then planted 7 rows of fodder corn and 2 rows of beans.

6^th June 1908 (Saturday)

Cool morning fair and warm wind SW to W. David and G. Sargent at Club House. Jim went to Greenville for grain and him and I seeded the patch behind Lowe’s garden. I cut and trimmed 3 lots. Wilson Ashley paid me 75 cents for cutting the Wilson and Bennet lots. Maggie cut off lilac blossoms, cinnamon rose in flower at back door. Also pink’s in cemetery. Got letter from Alice and Hamish.

7^th June 1908 (Sunday)

Warm and sunny. Mr. Burnet of Brookline preached from Joshua 4-23. S.S. after Mr. B. leader. C.E. Mrs. D. Blood leader topic True Penitence. A fair attendance. David took heifer to Russell Pasture in morning.

Raymond K. Somero

April 28, 1932 - May 10, 2026

Funeral Services were held for long-time resident Ray Somero on Friday May 39, 2026. Many town residents and relatives were in attendance at the Service.

Ray was no stranger to the Historical Society. In 2021 we interviewed Ray and his brother Earl to compile an oral history of New Ipswich. We were masked because the interview took place during the COVID pandemic.

Ray served in the Coast Guard as a radar operator. He was buried with military honors.

25th May 1912

Fair with occasional showers; wind variable north and east, etc. David at Miss Barr’s; also finished the Kimball painting in cemetery and harrowed Mr. Lord’s garden. Mr. Blanchard called in evening asking him to paint signboards. I cut lots all day. Hr. Heald’s man called for his chickens (70). Got letters from Alice, May, and Hh (Hamish); p.c. from Hh called “Local Showers.”

26th May 1912

Fair and warm; wind variable from east to west. Mr. Lord preached to fair attendance on the necessity of strong convictions. I was out of sorts so was not at church. S.S. after. Collection: 27 cents. Evening service. 47 present.

27th May 1912

Fair and warm; wind west and southwest. David papering at Miss Barr’s. I cut lots all day. Lena Preston had a headstone put up today for Fred. Also a stone was put up on Whitney lot. Carl’s father. Got letter from Hamish who is coming on Thursday forenoon.

28th May 1912

Warm and windy; wind west and variable. David cutting Preston lawn and odd jobs in Cemetery. I cut and trimmed lots; got flowers for Hubbard lot from Ayer.

29th May 1912

Warm and cloudy. David ploughing at Daniel Maynard’s. I trimmed some. Also cut Mrs. Tarbell’s father’s lot, filled the vase on Hubbard lot, put flowers on Leighton lot, washed democrat (Type of carriage) and took chickens out incubator. Got letter from Tina Thompson (Mrs. McGill) and from Salem about Bolton & Taylor lots. This was held at Memorial Day here and year by year the numbers are decreasing and enthusiasm failing. The Ashby band discoursed some music; the Oration by a party from Lawrence. I was busy and did not go to the ceremony at the Cemetery or Hall. Hamish telephoned from Ayer after 9 p.m.

30th May 1912

Dull, drizzly day; wind east. David went for Hamish who came by 10:10 a.m. train and is looking well. I rested most of the day after clearing out incubators and mowed round the house.

31st May 1912

Cold and drizzly; wind north and northwest; cold enough for snow. David and Daniel painting at Daniel Brown’s cottage. John Preston came in the afternoon. Hamish and I fixed garden fence this afternoon.

Memorial Day Observance - May 17, 2026

New Ipswich holds its Memorial Day Observance a week before the federal holiday. This allows the town to schedule a band for the the parade without competing with other small towns. There are three ceremonies

Leonard Kangas - Killed in WWII

Thank you Patricia Ktistes for providing us with this text for our Memorial Day Observance. Leonard was the only town resident who was killed in action during WWII.

NEW IPSWICH 2026 MEMORIAL DAY SPEAKER TO READ ALOUD:

Today we remember Leonard Israel Kangas, the Town’s only serviceman killed in action during World War II. A son of Finnish immigrant parents, John and Sanna Kangas, Leonard was born April 13, 1919, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Leonard died at age 23 on September 15, 1942, aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp near the Solomon Islands in the Coral Sea.

Leonard was two years old when his parents fulfilled their American Dream. His father worked in a Worcester Steel mill and the family saved enough for a down payment on a farm at the end of what now is known as Kangas Road. This farm was where Leonard and his four brothers and one sister grew up.

In high school at Appleton Academy Leonard by 1937 was captain of the basketball team, which was nicknamed the Fighting Finns. He also was chosen as a New Hampshire State All-Star. Until the Appleton gymnasium was built, the team practiced and hosted games in the Old Town Hall, located only a few hundred yards from where we stand today. During the Great Depression, basketball provided not only exercise for the players but also fostered a strong sense of community.

During the mid-1930s, Appleton and Peterborough had a fierce basketball rivalry. Mrs. Harold Clukay, widow of Peterborough’s star center player from that era, recalled how Appleton perfected scoring despite the Old Town Hall not being regulation-size. The ceiling was so low that players couldn’t arch the ball because it would hit the ceiling and be out-of-bounds. Instead, they perfected the backboards, shooting the ball out straight, hitting the backboard, and dropping it into the net. Although Appleton had fewer than 100 students back then, they competed against big teams, like Manchester Central.

Leonard’s reputation as “The Blond Blizzard” reached New York City. He was scouted by the Yankees as well as the team later to become the Boston Celtics. However during that era you had to pay your own expenses when recruited to train with a professional farm team. Leonard’s parents couldn’t afford that so he was unable to join a team.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1940, serving aboard the USS Wasp as Petty Officer Third Class with a specialty as Store Keeper Third Class. He also served as captain of the ship’s basketball team. Official Navy archives include a photo of him playing on a hangar deck. What follows next is wording from the telegram Leonard’s father received in 1942, a few weeks after his son was lost:

REAR ADMIRAL RANDALL JACOBS CHIEF OF NAVAL PERSONNEL

On September 15, 1942, Leonard was killed by Japanese torpedoes when his ship was supporting the invasion of Guadalcanal. During the torpedo attack, 193 crewmen aboard the Wasp were either killed or missing and 366 were wounded. Leonard was assigned that day to work in a supply room on the third deck, at the water line. Because of a transcription error when operational orders were decoded, the Wasp mistakenly was sent in range of the Japanese submarine picket line. One of their submarines fired six torpedoes, three of which struck the Wasp One hit directly at Leonard’s station and nobody in that area of the ship survived.

Fine clear sunny day; wind westerly. David teaming out manure to incubator field in forenoon and harrowing it in in afternoon. Also harrowed the place where corn grew last year. I burned some brush in incubator field and went for mail Got church ready for service tomorrow and filled maps in vestry, kitchen, and dining room. Got p.c. from Hamish, letter from Alice. Dave had one from Newcomb, notifying Express sent which he is going to Greenville for tonight. Miss Barr called at 5:30 p.m. asking Dave to do some painting and papering.

19th May 1912

Fair with strong west wind. Mr. Loomis of Ashby preached from text “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Fair attendance; S.S. after. Evening service at 7 p.m. Good turnout but I was busy shutting up chicks, etc.

20th May 1912

Cloudy; occasional drizzle; east to southeast wind. David ploughing at Walkers’. I cut some lots and went to mail. Got letter from Hamish; also a box of roses, which he sent from Troy. Mr. Bucknam fixing a base for monument on Fred Preston’s grave. Lecture at Academy tonight. Subject: Foods, Milk. A very good lecture, only accoustics {sic] of Hall are bad.

21st May 1912

Thunderstorms during night; fair and warmer today; wind variable from east to west and back to east. David and Lonie painting and papering at Principal Lewis’. I cut some lots. Richeson (?) electrocuted early this morning, the end of a strange life. A man of good talent but variable and uncertain moods; a brilliant mind but subservient to the lower and grosser; afraid of death in prospect but acting as a brave man at the final crisis went singing to his death, trusting in his God. Favourite hymn: “Sometime We Will Understand”

22nd May 1912

Fair; sharp thunderstorm last night from 6:30 to 10 p.m. with rain and hail. Today fair with cool east wind to southeast. Dave and Lonie finishing at Mr. Lewis’ and Mrs. Brooks’. I swept and fixed Hall for dance tonight and trimmed some lots. Dave got letter from Mrs. Spofford. Good turnout at dance.

23rd May 1912

Dull morning; fine after; wind S.E. to S. Dave ploughing at Lowes’ in morning and at Spoffords’ till noon. Afterwards at Fanny Barr’s. I swept Hall, filled lamps, etc. for Grange tonight. Got letter from Hamish. Discussion in Grange on Initiative Referendum & Recall. Ice cream party after. Closed about 11 p.m.

24th May 1912

Fair and warm forenoon; thunderstorm in afternoon; wind west. Dave & W. Hardy opening a drain at Spoffords’ Pump and painting Kimballs’ railing on Cemetery lot. I went for Express for Mr. Newcomb in forenoon (3 trunks). Tuttle spoke to Dave today about painting the outside of Jennie Fox’s place. He also did some painting at Miss Fanny Barr’s in morning and went to Dan Brown’ house in the afternoon to measure for paper hanging.

We had a taste of a town without electricity in December 2008, it wasn’t fun.

Electricity in the Mills

There is no way in knowing where these photos were taken, but they are part of our collection of glass negatives that were taken in New Ipswich. I assume they were taken inside one of the mills that lined the Souhegan. The mills depended on water power with belts and pulleys to run the machines. However this is a photo of a dynamo that would produce electricity, direct current. Perhaps it was used for electric lighting for the factory.

Fair forenoon.; showers after; wind south to southeast. Mr. Lord preached from the text: “I can do all things through Christ that strengtheneth me.” S.S. after. Present: 11 seniors; 3 juniors. Collection: $.27. Mrs. McKown, Ferrin, Blanchard, Jenny Blood, Milloy (?) and friend in class. Evening service. Subject: Contrasts. A very good turn out in spite of the weather.

13th May 1912

Cloudy with occasional drizzle; wind south. David ploughing for Mr. Balch and Albro; also took a loam to Mrs. Brooks’ and brought box from Ames’ house to Mr. Spofford’s barn. Mrs. Maston at Spoffords’ from 11 a.m. I raked in front of John Preston’s house and went to mail; fixed screens on pantry window. Kesti boys put in cooler today. Andrian Linuke (or Linuhe ?) telephoned David about his a/c (account) and promised to be up at end of week to settle it.

14th May 1912

Fair with high west wind and during night so strong. I got up at 3 and went round brooder and incubators. Cloudy afternoon; showers at night. David ploughing at Mr. Bucknam’s till noon, whitewashing ceilings at Putnams’ after. Mrs. Proctor’s funeral this afternoon. Maggie at Dan Brown’s/ Mrs. B. gave her a quantity of old and new things. Got letter from Hamish. Ambulance lecture at Academy tonight.

15th May 1912

Fair; cloudy, cool; wind west to southeast. David whitewashing downtown in forenoon and at Spoffords’ in afternoon. I cut lawn at Prestons’ and finished raking at front of Prestons’ house. Went to W. Prestons’ at night with Wilbur and D. Maynard to attest appraisement of Sophrania Knowlton’s inventory.

16th May 1912

Rain, steady heavy showers; wind northeast. David at Spoffords’ with W. Hardy in forenoon and teaming freight for Mr. Newcomb from Depot. Ladies’ Sewing Circle today.

17th May 1912

Showery with thunder in afternoon; wind south to west. David & Daniel at Spoffords’. I finished cutting the grass at Prestons’ and went to mail. Got letter from Hamish. Got 3 dollars from Dan Brown for appraising Sophronia Knowlton’s estate.

It was a cold wet Saturday when we gathered at the library to listen to the poetry of Robert Frost recited by Jeffry Zygmont. It was a New Hampshire Humanities event hosted by the New Ipswich Historical Society, the New Ipswich Library and the Stearns Burton Fund.

Jeff recited Frost poems that painted a vivid picture of rural life in New Hampshire of a bygone era in all seasons. The subjects were joyful, sad, philosophical and poignant. It was truly an enjoyable afternoon.

4th May 1912

Fair and cool wind, variable, backing to southeast. David ploughed Balch’s field in morning. Went for pen stakes for Mr. Taylor. Ploughed garden and auto came for him to go to a brush fire in Temple and found it was out when they got there. I fixed incubators, cleaned church, etc. Brought down some old shingles from Jenny Fox’s. Got letters from Alice and Hamish.

5th May 1912

Fine day. Communion Sabbath – a good attendance. Robert and Lena Walker admitted as members. Mr. Lord preached a good sermon from 2 Corinthians 8-9. S. S. after. Evening service. Topic: Signboard. 44 present

6th May 1912

Dull and rainy; wind southeast to east. Robert Walker came running in at 5:45 to say that the brooder house was on fire and did good work carrying water. Dave and him had it out before help came (D. Maynard, W & A. Hardy) Over 100 chickens roasted and suffocated. Not much damage done to building. Three broken windows and roof burned through in spots. W. A. Preston came and inspected the place for assessment of damage. Dave fixed up the place after in a temporary way. Got letter from Hamish.

7th May 1912

Cloudy; wind east to southeast. David at Spoffords’. Also planting some peach, plum, and quince trees in her backyard which John Burton brought in morning. I went to mail, cleaned incubators, etc. David got a postcard from Mrs. Spofford.

8th May 1912

Rainy day; wind north east. David choring round; paint shop, etc. Went for mail and brought some chairs, etc. from Mrs. Lena Preston. Got letter from Mrs. Spofford with another postcard view of peach and plum trees in blossom. He went to Daniel’s with barrow, etc. in afternoon.

9th May 1912

Fair and warm forenoon; thunderstorm in afternoon. David went to Dixon Wheeler’s in the morning, also to Rafense (or Rafeuse ?) for fertilizer and in afternoon took oil drum to Prescotts’ and brought a load of lumber for Tuttle to Jenny Fox’s. Got letter from Jessie and papers. I fixed Hall for Grange tonight. 22 present

10th May 1912

Bear with occasional drizzle. Strong cool north to northwest wind. David plowing for Mr. Balch and harrowed part of Mr. Taylor’s garden. I seeded and fertilized lots in cemetery and went to mail. Myron Taylor came by auto in afternoon. Mrs. Prindle had a shock in Phelps’ store yesterday afternoon. Got letter and parcel of flowers from Hamish for mother. 12th being Mother’s Day. Also letter from May.

Cool windy day N to NW. David painting at Prescott’s. I chored around chickens, wrote to Miss Bryce. Mason’s meeting tonight. A fair turnout. Got home about 1 am.

29th April 1909(Thursday)

Hard frost cool variable winds, cloudy threatening rain. Dave at Travis’s. Got letter from Alice.

30th April 1909 (Friday)

Rain and sleet wind E to NE. trees coated and wire fences covered with ice. David at Prescott’s. Came home about 9 as Tom the horse was very restless. Went to Greenville for flour and hay. Painting at Prescott’s in afternoon. I got Hall ready for dance tonight. Few people there, dance stopped at midnight. Cold raw slushy night.

2nd May 1912

Fine day; east wind. Express Agent telephoned that Mr. Heald’s eggs had come, so I went and got them. Drew some money at Bank and paid Prescott. David with John Barnett trimming trees to Gordon’s and then with Daniel at Spoffords’ in the afternoon. He went to plough Mr. Lord’s ground. G. Sargent got away his chicks (64) and brought eggs for Mr. Heald. Got letter from Hamish. Mens’ Society organized in the Church tonight. 16 present

3rd May 1912

Fair with cool east to northwest wind. David finished Mr. Lord’s garden and Mr. Taylor’s and went in afternoon for grain. Preparatory service in Church today when Robert and Lena Walker were proposed as members of the Church and to be admitted on Sunday. Communion day—not many present (12). I washed out incubators and scrubbed brooders. Maggie swept the vestry. Got letter from May with children’s show in school group.

Members of the New Ipswich Historical Society had a productive meeting with Barbara Bankeroff at the Nashua Historical Society. Barbara gave us a tutorial for PastPerfect, a software product we will be using to catalog our collection. There will be a lot of work to do but will result in a more complete picture of our town’s story.

20th April 1909 (Tuesday)

Cool day wind variable N.E. to E. David out with team in morning and again in afternoon. I filled boiler and cleaned up leaves into one horse team and fixed two brooders. Got pc from Hamish last night also letter from Mary Mair. Wind up social at the Parsonage tonight. John Barnett at Spofford’s today getting vinegar.

21st April 1909 (Wednesday)

Cold raw day wind east. David teaming home wood for Knowlton. I fixed brooder lamps, chicks coming out. Davis boy fixing a lot in cemetery today. Got letters from Alice & Hamish who is afternoon boss “pro tem”.

22nd April 1909 (Thursday)

Thunderstorms about 11 pm last night with showers& showery morning, fair today wind variable from E to W by W. Balloon passed over village about 3 pm. David painting room above kitchen today, and started to Greenville in afternoon for grain, but found out on the way that it was half-holiday there. Fast Day. Flushing brought his eggs today. B. Thompson & him afterwards drove to Huckins. Sewing circle in vestry today and Grange tonight. 7 members got 1st & 2nd degrees.

23rd April 1909 (Friday)

Cool cloudy morning, showery after fair evening, wind west to NW. David teaming wood for Knowlton in forenoon. He spoke to L. Willard about heifer who advised getting Mr. Shaw the vet who came in afternoon but was unable to do anything for her so we killed her and buried it in the sand pit with permission of Flushing. A. Hardy and Lonie helping him. Mother swept vestry and little room. I took 57 chicks out incubator. Got pc from Hamish and letter from May who is coming tomorrow.

24th April 1909 (Saturday)

Cool windy day sunny. Dave went for grain from Greenville in forenoon, and went to Depot in afternoon to meet May and children. I got Hall ready for Finn dance tonight. Got letter from Hamish but none from Alice.

25th April 1909 (Sunday)

Frosty morning wind west, cloudy afternoon with showers in evening. Mr. Peacock preached on the renewing and awakening in Spirited & Plant Life. S.S. after 9 seniors 3 juniors. C.E. at 7pm topic African Missions. I led 11 present.

26th April 1909 (Monday)

Cool and cloudy wind northerly. David fixing up brooders &c. Mr. Hardy called about 1225 am to say he found window in belfry open and inner door of Church open. We found on examination that the bolt had been bent by the force exerted in forcing door open, but could see no damage done. Rehearsal at Masonic Hall tonight. Got letters from Mrs. Spofford and from Jim at Oakdale.

The “Pizza Church”

The Community Christian Church is located on Main Street in New Ipswich, NH. Originally it was a Baptist Church, later was home to several businesses including a pizza parlor, video store, dentist office and barber shop. It is once again hosting religious services - Contact phone number is (603) 878-9941.

The building on the right side is the Engine house which is still standing. It was built for $1282.46 as reported in the town reported dated Feb 1873.

13th April 1909 (Tuesday

Fair day strong south wind, drying up roads &c. David painting at Miss Palmer’s. I filled boiler and put some stones in orchard drain. Had horses out, also cows. Got Easter cards from brother Bob, and Agnes Roger. Bert Mansfield started for out west yesterday. Mrs. Sampson telephoned that May was coming on Thursday. Mr. Huckins telephoned for Fred Cushing to come over and see him. Heard the frogs peeping tonight.

14th April 1909 (Wednesday)

Fine south mild rain, changing winds. David at Miss Palmer’s. I put some wood ashes on some lots. Got letter from Berkley saying May had cold and could not come.

15th April 1909 (Thursday)

Rain, wind easterly to west, fair after 10 am. Grass beginning to look green. David painting at Miss Palmer’s. I fixed pen for brooders. Got letter from Hamish, all well. Put wood ashes on lots yesterday and today.

16th April 1909 (Friday)

Fair and warm wind variable. David at Miss Palmer’s. I put out horses, cows and heifer and cleaned their places. Mother and I swept Church vestry, little room, stairs &c. &c. Professor Lane of Cushing Academy called tonight asking to come and pull his auto out of the mud. He got stuck about Lonie’s somewhere. David went with Tom.

17th April 1909 (Saturday)

Showery morning, fair and warmer after. David at Miss Palmer’s. I chored around, sowed clover seed on Gordon’s and Webber lots, also Marshall put stone in ditch at wagon shed, also cleaned out one pen in hen house. Dr. Jones called today to say I was drawn Juror. Got letter from Alice today.

18th April 1909 (Sunday)

Fine day. Mr. Peacock preached from Col’s 3. S.S. after present 4 old and 4 young ones. C.E. topic Lord’s Day. Leader Mrs. Blood 21 present. Hamish telephoned about 9 at night. Mother & Dave at Club House in morning, and Mary’s grave.

19th April 1909 (Monday)

Fair and warm. Thunder peals in afternoon. David at Miss Palmer’s. Mrs. Spofford &c went this afternoon also Myron Taylor and wife, Mr. & Mrs. Hooper & Carrie Lowe. I cleared off manure and leaves at Spofford’s lot, Davis lot & Kimball lot, and went to Farrar Tablet meeting at Miss Lee’s at 3 oclock. Mr. Peacock had Pete out driving this afternoon

6th April (Tuesday)

Fair and warm wind west to S.W. David & H. Royce jacking up brooder house. I had cows & heifer out. Went to mail Mrs. Beard. Met Miss Dean on road. Social at Parsonage tonight, I spoke on the “Moon”.

7th April 1909 (Wednesday)

Fair and warm 42 degrees at Mr. Gordon’s at 1pm. David & H. Royce at brooder house and filling tank at Mr. Spofford’s. Wm Davis cleaning carpets at Mrs. Huckins with his patent vacuum cleaner. He also cleaned our hair cloth sofa. It certainly does excellent work. Selectmen called today. I did not see them but Dave met them in barn. Cows values $32 each. I do not know horse valuation.

8th April 1909 (Thursday)

High winds all night and day, moderating in afternoon. David at Spofford’s clearing up, and Royce & him brought the ashes down in afternoon. I lit Church fire &c for sewing circle tonight and Hall fire for Grange. Miss Dean and Miss Wilbur called in afternoon. 19 at Grange closed 11 pm.

9th April 1909 (Friday)

Snow flurries cool east to wind. David painting at Miss Palmer’s Huckins place sold to Flushing. Sent incubator tank to Farrar’s. Got watch from New York, also letter and Easter card from Hamish , papers from Scotland last night.

10th April 1909 (Saturday)

Frost very cold west wind. David at Miss Palmer’s. I took turnips to M. Robbins and brought meat, laundry, and incubator tank from Farrar’s. Got letters and Easter cards from Bayshore, papers from Roslin. Flagstaff at Club House blown down.

11th April 1909 (Sunday)

Hard frost 16 degrees, cool wind N.W. to W. growing warmer in afternoon. Mr. Peacock preached on Christ the Light. S.S. after 8 present. A large attendance of people at Church. C.E. Tonight 7 pm. Topic “The Risen Christ” Leader Mr. Peacock 21 present.

12th April 1909 (Monday)

Frost cool westerly wind variable after. David painting at Miss Palmer’s. I filled little incubator and planted a tree for John Preston. Got letters from Hamish and Easter cards from Cora Roger. Telephone man called today to fix the phone. I paid him monthly bill. Mr. Gordon spoke about planting a tree in cemetery lot.

This is the Campbell House, built in 1811, torn down June 1951. I’m guessing we can guess where it was located by studying the first photo. On the left you can see the rear view of the Baptist church. Was it located on Main Street?

March 30th 1909 (Tuesday)

Frosty morning, fine day, cloudy with cool west and N.W. winds. David choring round in forenoon, and helping Lonie in afternoon. I took away some leaves from south end of house and at back door. Found sillas peeping through and periwinkle green. Mr. Travis called in morning to talk over Church affairs. Got long letter from Hamish last night, also one from Mrs. Spofford who comes on 8th. I went up to Mrs. Amee’s and found it just as she left it. Got letters from Berkley today. Grange meeting postponed till tomorrow night.

March 31st 1909 (Wednesday)

Frosty fine day, cool north west wind ice melting. David went for the wagon front wheels he bought a week ago at Waldo Whitney’s auction, and helping Lonie in afternoon. The robins appeared this morning in the trees beside our house and I heard them whistling in the trees down the street. I started my incubator this morning with F. Mansfield’s eggs 308 and 52 of our own.

1st April 1909 (Thursday)

Frost fine day, cool north wind. David cleaned up Church cellar. Got letter from Alice. Church meeting today. Mr. & Mrs. Travis, Mr. & Mrs. Corbett, Mr. & Mrs. Sargent & baby, Mr. Bucknam, Mrs. Sampson, Mrs. Ferrin, Mrs. Newell, Mrs. Aldrich, Mrs. Thayer, Mrs. Stephen Wheeler, Mrs. Balch, Miss Lee, Miss Taylor, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Wheeler, and myself. Mr. Wheeler Moderator opened at 215 pm with prayer by Deacon Roger. Miss Taylor elected clerk, Mr. C Wheeler treasurer (Who reported $40000 withdrawn from Bank at Greenville and $50000 deposited in Massachusetts.) Mr. Travis and Mrs. Ferrin elected standing committee of the Church. Mrs. C. Wheeler Ed Wheeler & James Roger trustees of Lincoln Fund Deacon Roger appointed delegate to County Convention and Charles Wheeler alternate. Deacon Roger & Daniel P. Maynard to take the collection in Church. Mr. Travis alternate to Daniel. Voted to retain Mr. Peacock for 1 year from 1st June at same salary. Yeas 13 Nos 2. Move to adjourn by J Roger. Supper and social in Church tonight. 45 at supper cleared 5 dollars closed at 945pm.

2nd April 1909 (Friday)

Frosty fine day wind S.W. to S,E, clouding at night. David painting windows, wagons etc and went to Mrs. Walker for eggs for hatching got 240. I went to Warren Pratt’s funeral service which was with Mason’s rites. He was the oldest Man and Freemason in town in his 89th year. I believe Otis Wheeler is older than he was. Mr. Peacock gave a very nice address at the funeral service. The body was taken to Fitzwilliam the Masons present at the funeral were Mr.’s Blanchard, Beard, Moore, Maynard, Phelps, Spofford, Gordon and myself. The roads got pretty muddy but the sky was blue overhead and the robins whistling in the trees. Got letter from May last night.

3rd April 1909 (Saturday)

Snow and sleety showers, wind E & N.E. David choring round, painting &c. I swept Church vestry, little room, and stairs. Started another incubator. W. Preston called today with paper about state tax bill for signature. Moses Balch sent papers from Bank of England about Spanish Swindle. The snow is today covering my darling Mary’s grave, her 41st birthday. Got letters from Alice & Hamish.

4th April 1909 (Sunday)

Fine day, westerly wind. Mr. Peacock preached on “What a good man should be” a fairly good congregation. S.S. after present 10 in all. C.E. at night topic “Proverbs” Mrs. Aldrich leader 17 present Coal fire not lit today in Church.

5th April 1909 (Monday)

Frosty fine day wind variable. David choring round, swept chimney &c, and went to Greenville in afternoon for grain &c. Miss Bacou’s funeral today. I filled boiler put out cows, horse blankets &c. Got letter from Hamish whose shift is changed from night to day work, 1pm to 11pm. Measuring contest at Baptist Church tonight.

Frosty fine day, good sun heat during day, clouding over in afternoon wind west to S.W. forcast rain or snow tonight. Wednesday Fair. David choring round in forenoon and went to Greenville with apples and turnips to Robbin’s. Brought tomatoes and onions also freight for Wilbur. Got pc from May and Barbara has 2 teeth. All the rest well , also a few lines from Hamish with papers for Wilbur to rectify. Social at Parsonage tonight. Principal Lewis speaks on “Light” There was a fairly good attendance and good lecture.

March 17th 1909 (Wednesday)

Snow in morning and occasional flurries during the day, wind westerly. David fixing up in carriage house, and helping Willard_Lonie in afternoon. I cleaned up wood shed and will sell tickets tonight at Ladies Entertainment in Union Hall. Sold 100 tickets receipts: $1500. The drama was fairly well staged.

March 18th 1909 (Thursday)

Frost cold north west wind. David fixing his team, also hearse house door, went to Chandler’s shop for some fittings in forenoon, and to Greenville for grain in afternoon, also Hamish’s bag and letter from him. Mother and David cleared up closet in David’s bedroom. I took leaves, lime and shells to hen house.

March 19th 1909 (Friday)

Frosty, wind north west to west. Warming up during day, snow melting and roads muddy. David took democrat wagon apart to paint. Mr. Bucknam took him in afternoon to help dig a grave for Mr. Greenman who died last night. Got pc from Hamish. There has been changes in night shift. Byron resigned and Shea installed in his place.

March 20th 1909 (Saturday)

Snow during night, cloudy day wind N to NW. David finished Greenman’s grave in morning and helping Lonie in afternoon. Got letters from Alice and Hamish. Mr. Bucknam’s horse fell with hearse.

March 21st 1909 (Sunday)

Frost, fine bright day with cool NW wind to W. Mr. Peacock preached from text “ In Patience Possess yes your soul”. S.S. after 10 present. C.E. topic Pilgrim’s Progress. Leader Miss Taylor. 20 present. Fine aurora.

March 22nd 1909 (Monday)

Hard frost 20 degrees. Bitter cold, north wind all day. David teaming wood from mountain to chair shop. I walked to Greenville, and got hair cut, laundry, alcohol, &c. Wrote to Jessie and May.

March 23rd 1909 (Tuesday)

Hard frost cold north winds. David choring round paint democrat &c. I lit lamps in cyphers incubators, and fixed Hall for lecture tonight on the Whirlwind of the Century by Rec’d (?) E.C.E. Dori0n from the state Grange. Got letter from brother Bob and one from May tonight.

March 24th 1909 (Wednesday)

Frost fine mild day. Snow melting and water running. David at Walt Whitney’s sale. Bought a pair of wheels and ice box. Pete sick today. Saw a bluebird in orchard today. Masonic meeting tonight.

March 25th 1909 (Thursday)

East wind and rain, sleet and hail all day. I swept Hall and vestry and lit fires in both places for Grange and sewing circle. Bill and Corbett arrived he went for Mrs. Peacock and that was all of the circle. Mrs. Huckins and Mrs. Sargent were also there. No Grange.

March 26th 1909 (Friday)

Slight frost, fairly good sun heat, ice melting slowly, westerly winds. David fixed up ice chest, and picked over potatoes in cellar. I filled boiler and went for mail. Got letter from Hamish who is now doing a lot of office work. Corbett fixed up back door of Church this afternoon, gave great talk on Church matters when he brought key.

March 27th 1909 (Saturday)

Mild day west wind showery pm, fairing later. David painting democrat and went for grain, took turnips and cabbages to Brown Bros. I swept Church and went to meeting at Miss Lee’s about Farrar Tablet. Saw Miss Taylor after, agreed to have Church meeting on Friday 1st April.

March 28th 1909 (Sunday)

Frosty fine day, cool northerly winds. Mr..Peacock preached from 1 Peter 5-6 Humility. S.S. after present 6. C.E. Mrs. E. Wheeler leader topic Books 15 present.

March 29th 1909 (Monday)

Sharp frost, wind north. David took Pete to Greenville to get clipped. He broke loose during the night, wandered about bard. D came home about 1230 then went to blacksmith’s shop and came up with Mr. Huckins, went over with him and stayed till after 5 pm. Mrs. Obear called in forenoon and Mrs. Peacock called in the afternoon. Academy dance tonight.

Fine morning rain began about dinner time, wind west to South. Hamish went per 1145 train. Town meeting day a good turnout. Selectmen: Mr. Blanchard, Jowders & Preston. Road agents E. Wheeler, Dixon Wheeler& Bert Taylor. School Board member Professor Chandler, Sam Thayer, and Amos Shirland had some bitter words before meeting was open in morning. Dance in Hall at night by “Jolly Five”.

March 10th 1909 (Wednesday)

Drizzly day fresh wind south ice melting of trees and roads running with water. We put in settees in morning. Dave, W. Hardy, & Dan spent forenoon card playing. D went in afternoon to Express Office for parcel from May. I washed up places in Hall and partly dried floor. Got pc from Hamish from Worcester.

March 11th 1909 (Thursday)

Frost 8 degrees wind NW to West, fine day but gusty, high winds during the night. David choring round went to mail in forenoon and to Lonie’s in afternoon. I swept Hall for Grange tonight and went to mail in afternoon.

Frosty wind northerly, warmer during day. 2 sun dogs seen by Mrs. Phelps this morning. David, Daniel and Walter cutting trees this morning and went to Greenville in afternoon, bought shovel, sardines, & candies. I filled boiler, got weekly Scotsman, People’s Journal, & Midlothian from Roslin today. 19 people at Grange last night.

Frosty mild but not much thaw, cloudy afternoon threatening snow wind south to south west. David went to Greenville for coal, and to the woods in afternoon. I fixed Church fires &c. Got letters from Hamish, Alice, Jessie Mair and People’s Friend &c from Roslin.

Frosty, fair wind westerly. David fixing Hearse House door and at Lonie’s in afternoon. Church society meeting at 2pm. Present Mr. & Mrs. Peacock, Mr. & Mrs. Wheeler, Mr. & Mrs. Corbett, Mr. & Mrs. Sargent, Mrs. Bucknam, Mrs. Ferrin, Miss Taylor, Mr. Travis, F. Whittemore, & James Roger. Elections Mr. C. Wheeler as Moderator, clerk and treasurer, F. Whittemore, G. Sargent & W Corbett Standing Committee. Mr. Peacock read report of Parsonage. Repairs Income of Church for year $107900. March 1st 1909 (Monday)

Frosty fine day, bright blue sky, wind East to West at noon. David took B & T to Depot in forenoon. Him and I brought over wood from the brooder house in afternoon. Masonic meeting at night for rehearsal. Got letter from Jammie Mair & pc from Berkley.

March 2nd 1909 (Tuesday)

Snow in morning, growing warming, snow melting roads slushy. Wind westerly. David cleaning harness all day. Got paper from Hamish with a/c of Revivals. Took leaves to hen houses, went for mail. Meeting at Parsonage tonight, Star Night.

March 3rd 1909 (Wednesday)

Frost, slippery roads wind E to NE, cloudy. David went for grain and took barrel of apples to Mr. Robbins, and fixed harness in afternoon. I swept Church and little room. Papers filled with account of the shooting of a French-Canadian at Temple the butler of General Miller by Rev. Mr. Eastman one of the posse who turned out to apprehend him yesterday afternoon.

March 4th 1909 (Thursday)

Snow showers wind N.E. David choring round, spent afternoon with D. Maynard cleaning harness afternoon. I have cold but went for mail. Got letter from Alice and Hamish. Mr. Eastman of Temple before authorities yesterday. Verdict Justified Homicide.

March 5th 1909 (Friday)

Hard frost cold west wind making snow drifts but not deep merely sweeping snow along. David finishing harness cleaning. Joe Silver telephoned him to go up mountain and see some wood that Walker wants teamed. He went in afternoon and they have arranged to start teaming tomorrow.

March 6th 1909 (Saturday)

Frost find bright sunny day wind to S.W. David teaming wood from Bein to Walker, Got letters from Alice also from Hamish who is coming tomorrow, also from Roslin, a Weekly Scotsman, Glasgow Mail & People’s Journal.

March 7th 1909(Sunday)

Frosty fair with snow showers in afternoon wind W to S. Mr. Peacock preached on the “Ethiopian Eunuch”. Communion after 19 partook, no Sabbath School. C.E. Leader Mrs. Thayer. Topic 46th Psalm. Hamish came per afternoon train.

March 8th 1909 (Monday)

Frosty fine day wind west to north David and Hamish put sawdust in Hall. I filled lamps and kept up fires in Church & Hall. David, Hh Dan & W. Hardy drove to Greenville in afternoon. Got notes for Henry S. Royce. Masonic meeting tonight. Mrs. Bucknam called in afternoon, also Misses Wilbur & Letlow.

February 23rd 1909 (Tuesday)

Frosty but fine. Mr. Peacock preached from text “He shall give power to the faint” A good number at Church. C.E. Mrs. Wheeler leader

February 24rd 1909 (Wednesday)

Frost 22 degrees wind NW to N. fine day but cold. David at Ashburnham with chair stock for Walker. home 530 pm, Hamish went with Hollis at 530 am. I had neuralgia (intense nerve pain) so rested all day.

February 25th 1909 (Thursday)

Hard frost (6 below zero) wind bucking west to S.E. and East. David teaming for Wheeler at Smithville. I filled boiler and Jim split some wood. Got P,C. from Hamish. Dan Brown looked at /Mary cow.

February 26th 1909 (Friday)

Snow all day wind east. David went to Chandler for grass cutting machine and wheel for barn door and choring around. F Hardy took rods for chandeliers from Hall to get shortened. Broke one of the globes. We expect Hamish to be in Greenville tonight as messenger.

February 27th 1909(Saturday)

Misty with small rain and trees dripping wind N.E. to N. David getting home wood. I fixed Hall for Grange tonight.

February 28th 1909 (Sunday)

Hard frost – fine bright day wind north to west. David at Mason with Dill Hudson for wood – home at 4 pm and Jim and him brought home a load of wood. Shelled some corn in afternoon. Grange Committee washing up in afternoon at Grange last night. There was 40 present 9 strangers. Discussion on Town Warrant during the evening. Brown and Bros. took away the cow today.

29th February 1909 (Monday)

Hard frost (24 degrees) David at Mason for wood for Walker. I cleaned Hall for Finn dance. And swept Church and vestibules also lit furnace. Got letter from Alice also P,C, from Hamish.

February 16th 1909 (Tuesday)

Frost – fine day Mr. Smith preached from text “Bear ye one another’s burdens” told some plain truths about the decay of religion in New England. And advocating work amongst the foreign population. C.E. Miss Taylor leader topic: “Caring for prisoners and sick” 11 present. Berkley’s cold better. David and him put dump cart on wheels.

February 17th 1909 (Wednesday)

Frosty – slight showers of snow which melted as it fell. David went for coal for George Chapman and got horses sharpened. Berkley went away with him. Telephone man called for his monthly a/c. Got ½ dozen red herrings from F Shirland. Had cows out in forenoon.

February 18th 1909 (Thursday)

Hard frost 24 degrees wind west to North. David went for coal for ourselves (2420 lbs)And teamed gravel to Long Hill for washed out roads. Took some carriage shafts from Lonies to Sawyer’s and brought one back. Rehearsal of degrees by Grange in Hall tonight. John Newell cutting wood for Hall. Dr. Hildreth’s father’s picture in Hall fell owing to bad wire and broke glass. Odd Fellows have put up two chandeliers in Hall. Corbett put in the Church wood today. I filled boiler and emptied coal. Will Spaulding of Ashby died yesterday.

February 19th 1909 (Friday)

Snowing all day – wind East to N.E. David doing Huckin’s chores in morning and to repair sidewalks but found it too stormy. He cleaned up barn and sawed up wood in brooder house. I took hay to hen houses Got letter from Cora Roger her father hurt foot and had operation. No letter from Hamish today so we called him on telephone and found them all well. He sent P.C. yesterday but it has not come.

February 20th 1909 (Saturday)

Cold but fair wind N.W. David went out over the sidewalks in morning and out on road roller afterwards with Bill Hudson and Freeman Wright. I fixed vestry for Sewing Circle and Hall for Grange rehearsal

February 21th 1909 (Sunday)

Frost (22 degrees) fine day warm in sun. David went to Eaton’s for chair stock for Mr. Walker and took snow plough and grass cutting machine down to Chandler’s afterwards. Got letter from Hamish who expects to be home tomorrow by forenoon train. I swept vestry, little room, and stair, also put leaves in hen house.

February 22nd 1909 (Monday)

Frost 14 degrees wind W to NW. David at Eaton’s for Walker’s chair stock. Jayquith came in afternoon and sawed our wood about 4 cords. I fixed Hall for Odd Fellows. David lit Church furnace. Hamish came by stage in forenoon. Town warrant posted today. Requisition for library. Home Week. Settees for Hall and roads from Rafeuse & four corners. Haughton legacy and Josiah Reed.

Grace Tallarico gifted the Historical Society with this framed photo of a woman reading to her son. She mentioned that the photos was taken in the Little Red House, but the window design does not seem to match.

Hard frost (8 below zero) Mr. Peacock on early communistic life of Apostles. 23 present. S.S. after 5 or 6 Odd Fellows came to Hall this afternoon to clean up their supper dishes. C.E. tonight 27th anniversary of the C.E. Society

February 10th 1909 (Wednesday)

Frost Zero fine mild day. Getting cloudy at night. David at Walker’s logging wood. I filled boiler and Jim and I shelled corn. Got telegram from Alice saying Granny Cochran died last night also letter from Hamish. Mrs. Amee paid 50 cents for telephone use. David home at 610 pm. Delayed helping Bush Mansfield at Chapman’s

February 11th 1909 (Thursday)

Frost 14 degrees – fine warm day. David logging for Walker. I helped to lift the matting and Jim and I shelled corn. Got a letter from Alice I saw Mercury tonight shortly after sunset.

February 12th 1909 (Friday)

Frost 26 degrees – fine mild day and wind N.E. to S.E. David logging for Walker. Mother and I lifted matting in Jim’s room. Jim and I cleaned out stalls for cows in barn heifers out for a run

February 13th 1909 (Saturday)

Drizzly day. David not out today. Busy painting pung (?). I fixed Hall for Grange tonight. 1 + 2 degree on Mr. Whiting. Some discussion about use of dishes for Odd Fellows.

February 14th 1909 (Sunday)

Thawing all day. Wind variable. David logging for Walker. Finished today. Jim and I picked 4 chickens. He got his report card today. 71 pen. Had cows out in forenoon and heifers after roads very much cut up and slushy.

February 15th 1909 (Monday)

Heavy rain all day high South wind. Snow is nearly all gone. Clearing up at sunset. David went for grain in forenoon and Jim and he washed the harness after. Then David went in afternoon to meet Berkley who arrived at about 5. I fixed Church furnaces.

February 2nd 1909 (Tuesday)

Hard Frost. David went on sidewalks in forenoon & Walter Hardy helping him. Mr. Peacock preached from the text. I have learned in whatsoever &c. 8 present C.E. at night 9 present. Very cold all day and roads heavy as snow rollers have not been out yet. Hamish at Miss Taylor’s in afternoon.

February 3rd 1909 (Wednesday)

Hard frost 25 degrees. David teaming logs from Bismic (?) Hill to Walker’s. Hamish went to stage at 10 o’clock. David home at 645 pm.

February 4th 1909 (Thursday)

Hard frost 10 below fine bright day but cold NW wind. David logging for Walker with Warren Mansfield drawing out wood and bringing home at night. Home at 620pm. Jim and I shifted some corn in afternoon. I lit Hall fire for Grange rehearsal.

February 5th 1909 (Friday)

Hard frost (12 below) David went to woods at 9 0’clock. I fixed Hall for dance tonight. Hamish came to Greenville as messenger but did not come home as it threatened storm snow commenced to fall at 9 pm snowed a good deal during night.

February 6th 1909 (Saturday)

Frost but milder wind N.E. David did not go to woods, but fixed up place for cows in forenoon and went to Greenville in afternoon with quilt for Hamish. He brought Mr. Shaw the vet who filed the horse’s teeth and went over sidewalks afterwards. I fixed Hall for Grange tonight and after lighting up found I was a week too early.

February 7th 1909 (Sunday)

Frost fine day but growing colder after dinner went with David teaming logs for Walker. Mother and I lifted matting in my bedroom. Jim and I took refuse out barn to hen houses. David home 645 pm.

February 8th 1909 (Monday)

Hard frost – zero- cold NW wind all day. David teaming wood for Walker’s. Home at 6pm. I fixed Hall fire for Odd Fellows meeting tonight – also Church furnace fire and shelled some corn.

Frost 6 degrees wind N.W. very cold with slight flurries. David teaming from mountain to chair shop. I walked to Greenville and got hair cut and bought hat and tie also paid Prescott’s a/c.

27th January 1909 (Wednesday)

Frost 22 degrees. Fine day wind west and south west. David teaming from mountain to Depot. Got pc from Hamish and book from Alice. There was a good turn out of people at the Parsonage last night. Freemasons meeting tonight.

28th January 1909 (Thursday)

Frost 10 degrees very cold north west wind all day. David teaming from mountain to Depot. I lit Hall fire. Went to mail in afternoon got pc from May.

29th January 1909 (Friday)

Frost 22 degrees wind west and northwest, fine day. David teaming from mountain to Greenville Depot. Got letters from May, Hamish, and from Miss Barr in Boston with program of celebration of Burns Night. Mrs. Amee came today.

30th January 1909 (Saturday)

Stormy day wind N.E. to N.W. Snow showers and drifting a little. David teaming from mountain to Depot. I made out Selectmen’s accounts and went to Engine Hall with them in the afternoon. George Sargent went over the sidewalk in the afternoon. Got letter from Alice and pc from Hamish, also papers from Roslin.

31st January 1909 (Sunday)

Frost 10 degrees wind N.W. very cold day. Mr. Peacock preached on “An Open Door” not many present. S.S. after 6 present. C.E. Mr. Corbett leader 8 present.

February 1st 1909 (Monday)

Snow 9 degrees frost snow fell all day till 2 pm then rain. David went to Greenville took Mrs. Amee piano case and brought grain for Wilbur and ourselves also box for Mrs. Amee. I picked one chicken and took charge of library in afternoon as Mrs. Preston was in Boston. Hamish came up with Hollis at night.

19th January 1909 (Tuesday)

Intense frost. +2 degrees frost 10 below. David teaming hay to W. Davis. Got pc from Hamish and letters from Cora Roger and Mary Mair. I took leaves to hen houses and filled boiler.

20th January 1909 (Wednesday)

Frost 14 degrees of frost. Fine day wind west. Commenced our ice but water got over and stopped them. Put in three loads. D & W. Hardy went for sawdust.

21st January 1909 (Thursday)

Frosty fine day, good sun heat wind south west. David teaming lumber from mountain to Greenville Depot for Joe Silver. George Silver team tripped and delayed them for some time home about 630 pm. Got letter from Hamish last night, all well. I went to Mrs. Amee’s and took down the hammock, and tidied up a little in the house.

22nd January 1909 (Friday)

Warm and sunny wind South & S.W. snow melting fast. David teaming from mountain to Depot. I cleaned boards in hen house and gave them clover. Wrote to People’s Friend about Spurtles and Woman’s Home Companion about a poem called “Whistling in Heaven”. Got letters from Hamish & Alice. She tells us that Grampy had left Johnnie $500 under guardianship of lawyer and $100 each of the others.

23rd January 1909 (Saturday)

Foggy and drizzly all day wind east to north. David teaming lumber from mountain to Chair Factory in Greenville. Got letters from Alice & Hamish. Will Cochrane getting better but very weak. Hamish had a slight accident. A box containing silver fell on his head. Tonight is 20th anniversary of C. Knowlton’s marriage – reception to be in Baptist Church from 8 to 10 pm.

24th January 1909 (Sunday)

Drizzly day, wind N.E. Thunderstorms in afternoon, snow and sleet after. 12 at Church Mr. Peacock preached on “Victory through Faith” Professor Chandler opened with prayer. I gave closing prayer. No S.S. nor C.E. service only Mr. Peacock and I being present. I wrote to Hamish, Alice and Jessie Mair.

25th January 1909 (Monday)

Fine day but changeable fog and drizzle, but sledding keeps good. David teaming from mountain to chair shop. I filled boiler and turned over turnips in cellar.
