HILMA STARK REMINISCES:
EDWARD JOHN born Jul. 25, 1907
Edward was our half-brother, who later changed his name to Makela, Mother’s maiden name. He and Walter were very close. They were always cutting “kindling wood”. He had a hard, unhappy childhood. He went out to work at Carlson’s farm when quite young and came home dead tired, hardly able to eat his supper. Later on he worked at Batcheldor’s farm and then he went to Worcester to work and boarded with my Aunt Hannah. One summer, he came back to the farm to help out with the outside work. For transportation he acquired a motorcycle with a sidecar which he and Walter rode around in. One day returning from Pratt’s Pond after swimming, they were run into by our local electrician and were quite severely injured. Walter had a slight concussion but recovered in time and Edward had a severe injury to his leg.
Reminisces from Hilma Stark (b. 1917) who grew up in New Ipswich. She was sister to the late Elmer Stark who lived at the family place on Fox Farm Road (uncle of Sharon Anderson Rosenfelder). (probably recorded in the late 1970’s)
James Roger diary entry
26th June 1912
Warm and cloudy; threatening rain but cleared away; wind westerly. David & Lonie painting at Mrs. Parker’s till dinner; then went to Greenville for C. Perry’s luggage. Brought two bags grain and some oatmeal. Sidewalk dance tonight. I swept Hall and filled lamps; also put in some wood. Got letter from Hamish. May also had one from B.T. [possibly Beatrice Traver ] saying Mrs. McQueen (McQuain?) was dead. Masonic meeting tonight. Mr. Lewis elected Master.
I tried to contact Dottie Perry via Facebook (I don't have her email) and was told I'm not her friend. I never met Dottie although I played chess with her mother while she was in utero, and saw her as a baby. I've decided not to ask Dottie how to spell Chauncy since Chauncy himself told me how he spelled it and said his grandfather spelled it the same way. It was his grandfather that James was referring to, not Chauncy's father. I lived with Chauncy & Nancy in the fall of 1960 for a few days until Northeastern found me housing.
My question for James: Where is C. Perry at the time James is picking up his luggage?
