William Jurian Kaula diary
How different Paris seems under the August skies! My memories have been for the days of rain and continual gloom. Now all is bright and cheerful. The gardens are brilliant with flowers, the fountains sparkle in the sunshine, the streets are well shaded and the foliage massed into effective groups that I have not seen before. Either the heat or the amount of gas in the atmosphere has turned the leaves so that the city has somewhat the aspect of autumn with the tints of brown and yellow. There are the old familiar signs that strangers see so much in Paris as "Defence d'afficher" which answers for our "post no bills." It seems present on every wall in letters big enough to be seen hundreds of feet. The public buildings and schoolhouses bear the words "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite." At the same time I found Paris different than in the winter. There is a great difference in the amount of vechicles [sic] and bustle on the important promenades. Champs Elysées is comparitively [sic] open and not crowded so that a bicyclist could coast down from the Arc. In the shopping districts it is the same. The Avenue de Opera is generally a jam but is now only filled with straggling tourists. You can hear as much English as French on the Boulevard where the tourists can be found in swarms.
