William Jurian Kaula diary
6 APR 1898
The situation in U.S. is still uncertain, everything depends on Congress, according to the firey [sic] condition of that body, it would mean a declaration of war, not directly but by their rabid course. The Counsels have been ordered to leave Cuba. The Pope's influence in Spain may amount to something perhaps in the form of an armistice being declared in Cuba. Spain may grant this in this crisis as it would perhaps delay action in the United States. Spain will not admit the right of the United States to interfere in it affairs, on any ground whatever, but she has been forced to yield to pressure. The Powers may suggest further concessions.
