William Jurian Kaula diary
7 APR 1898
The Message is postponed until Monday. One excuse given is to allow time for Americans to leave Cuba. It is more probably that the President hopes that Spain will give in and that he is allowing them a few days of grace. The Cuban Junta has added to the harrassing [sic] character of the situation by making public the announcement of an uncompromising tone and declares that they will have independence or fight America too! Those that would have war on behalf of the Insurgents should have their ardor diminished by this extraordinary declaration. After all the sympathy for the hardships and sufferings of the Cuban Insurgents and non-combatants, this is a sample of their appreciation

James Roger diary entry
7th April 1909 (Wednesday)
Fair and warm 42 degrees at Mr. Gordon’s at 1pm. David & H. Royce at brooder house and filling tank at Mr. Spofford’s. Wm Davis cleaning carpets at Mrs. Huckins with his patent vacuum cleaner. He also cleaned our hair cloth sofa. It certainly does excellent work. Selectmen called today. I did not see them but Dave met them in barn. Cows values $32 each. I do not know horse valuation.
These diaries are precious. The man-in-the-street perspectives are authentic and provide us with local and international insight that would be otherwise lost. Thank you for posting them. We are richer for it.
James Roger's entry today is interesting. First, I didn't know vacuums existed in 1909. Secondly, one was taxed on ALL property owned which included livestock, including chickens. I wonder how the 'animal census' was done. No where in any town report have I read of a town official paid to tabulate livestock. Was this self-reporting? Did people hide some cows?
