William Jurian Kaula diary - Fig Eaters
6 MAR 1898
There is a set of men whom we call the Fig Eaters - I have often heard of vegetarians but never knew any fruit eaters like the Tim Cole, Upham, and Webster tribe. It all began with Tim Cole*, the son of the famous wood engraver. He was a confimed fruit eater and converted Upham and Webster. They make their meals on fruits such as figs, dates, oranges, and nuts. Webster and Cole look as if they lived on wind as both are as puny as little men can be. How Upham, who is a big fellow can subsist on such a diet I cannot imagine. The first time that I saw Tim Cole at Julien's last year I heard him tell about his Thanksgiven dinner which consisted of figs and honey. These men never feel any longings when they go by a place like Lavenue's or Foyot's - the two famous restaurants of this Quarter.
