William Jurian Kaula diary
Two November entries for today, catching up. December entries are a work in progress.
15 Nov 1897
I started to work in Viti's school in the life class under Mon. Collin* - the same school where I worked last spring and the one which I now prefer over all the others. I lose much perhaps by not being in a crowd of strong men as the work here is rather poor, but as it is the best place in which to work I will accomplish much more than if I went to Julien's, which is now very crowded and uncomfortable. Collin is a great painter and teacher as everyone knows. He can devote much more time to each student besides encouraging them in their work outside of the school. Besides I am much more in sympathy with Collin than with either Constant or Laurens at Julien's.
*Teacher may have been Raphael Collin (1850-1916).
16 Nov 1897
It is quite a mixture of students at Viti's but I have grown quite accustomed to being among so many "foreigners." There are but few Frenchmen, many Russians and Poles, one German Jew who claims England as his birthplace, one Japanese and a few Americans. Collin is an ardent admirer of Japanese art and has some reputation in Japan so that the few students who come from that country to Paris go to study under Collin.

Sunrise in New Ipswich, NH
I enjoy those old photos. I'm surprised that there are so few comments, many of the younger residents should still be alive and maybe still there. It was a great time to be in New Ipswich. There was a lot more patriotism and optimism then. Maybe cynicism develops with age. In any case, the sunrise was beautiful.
