William Jurian Kaula diary - December 1897
Two December entries today. No entries for 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. Catching up to the “present” day.
4 Dec 1897
There is no little amount of humor in some of the Frenchmen at Viti's school. There is often quite a little amount of pleasantry going on but no disturbing element that interferes with the work. It is the custom for the whole class to rise and bow when Monsieur Collin enters and leaves the room. Some of the men impressed the fact on a nouveau (?) that we had various other professors and a stranger was arranged to come in a few mornings ago and impersonate Monsieur Merson, the painter. When this imposter arrived we were all on our feet bowing and scraping with more than the usual amount of ceremony. He started in to criticize the work, telling one that he was a genius, and another that he would be a master, etc., but the laugh soon broke out and spoiled the joke before he reached the new student. This new fellow is a lad of gigantic proportions, a perfect infant Hercules and if he wished to resent the various tricks that were being played for his benefit there would be a lively time in the atelier. He submits to having newspapers put under his chair and set on fire, and does not seem to mind a few bags of water that splash across the floor from unknown quarters. Madvig seems to be the one that is most interested in playing practical jokes and as they are generally harmless no one is in bad humor over his pranks.

Work has been begun in earnest for the construction of the great fair in 1900 - at least the amount of work is now more apparent without the accounts of the plans that fill the newspapers and the illustrated phamplets [sic] that we see every day. The huge Palais d'Industry is about removed and so are many of the great buildings of the Champ de Mars where the exposition was last held. Both of the annual Salons are still without a place for their next annual exhibitions.
Later.
The two Salons are to be held this next season in the same building, the huge Palais des Machines, one of the old exposition buildings at the Champ de Mars. This building will remain for the next fair.

Snow on the ground, looking like winter. Photos taken in Smithville.
My mother talked about shopping at 'UCOOP' in Fitchburg when I was a boy. I don't know if this float is representative of that organization but I'm guessing yes.
