Drizzly day wind N.E. David on roads down town. Hamish & I sort of loafing around. Flag raising this forenoon, not very enthusiastic. Hamish went to Greenville with Fred Shirland in the afternoon. Got letter from Berkley all well.

Sadly no date on most of the photos. Breaking roads meant making them passable. The old town reports always mention the cost of "breaking roads" even if it meant rolling them.
My grandfather got paid $5/day breaking roads with horses. An adult man was paid $3/day, my father and uncle got $2.25/day because they were 'boys' (under 18? ,or 21?). The term 'breaking roads' I thought only applied building a new road. In the winter before people had cars roads were 'rolled' to pack the snow down. Is there a date for this picture?
