William Jurian Kaula diary
The gallant battery departed and the country is once more in its comatose state. Before daybreak we were disturbed by the preparations for the journey, and were thankful when the men had collected their guns, swords, pistols, horses, cannon, and waggons [sic] with all its awe-inspiring aspect and we could sleep in peace. There was no sham battle as we had expected and no mutilating of the fields and crops. They have gone miles out of sight and hearing of their atrocious brass band...
The valley is beginning to assume a gorgeous color by the rapid growth and abundance of the mustard plant. There are long strips and squares that checker the landscape with such a brilliant yellow that would delight a Chinese mandarin. These vivid plots can be seen for miles on all the hillsides and have the appearance of being painted by some magic hand who tried to enliven a grey day into bursts of sunlight by an imitation in lemon paint.
Brings back memories of Friday afternoon bbq and boating at veteran's park playing hooky from work at DEC. We worked hard, but we had fun.
