William Jurian Kaula diary
Since the days have grown much shorter there is less time for leisure. The effects begin early and the sun sets near five o'clock. There have been a few chilly days but not enough so to interfere with painting. This is the best season of the whole year for me. The landscape is not monotonous in color. The foliage has not yet turned completely. During the evenings we have a fire in our dining room - an open fire place that makes the room more attractive. The Poulain's are the most agreeable hotel keepers that I have yet met and we do not have those petty annoyances and troubles in getting what they agree to furnish with our original price. In fact it has been so comfortable and homelike here that I could remain in Crécy for years. There has been two more arrivals recently at the hotel a Mr. Amsden and Mrs. King - mother and son. Their names are different. Mr. Amsden is a man of about thirty-three and a fellow [sic] pleasant fellow. He is well acquainted with Mr. Major and hosts of other artists in America. He has been painting landscapes & particularly sunsets and twilight effects. His other work has a great tendency toward cold color. As he is devoting most of his time in getting "impressions" I cannot yet judge of his finished work. Of course it is impossible to paint a fair sized canvas at sunset as the effect only lasts but a few minutes and Mr. Amsden has various schemes of beginning early with a preparation according to what he expects the sunset will be and has the whole canvas ready at [sic] the final effect appears which he changes and corrects as rapidily [sic] as possible. He has produced many canvases of this sort in one painting each and completes them from memory. He is perfectly devoted to his mother and she takes such an active interest in his work that he often paints things just to please her. I should think that it might interfere with his ideas and work generally.
