William Jurian Kaula diary
Our two guests remained in my room late last night discussing questions of international importance. Allingham is not a typical Englishman and is so democratic in his views that it approaches socialism. I was sorry that Lord Salsbury has refused to represent England in the conference of the powers over the seal question as the subject kept me awake long after midnight. In spite of the fact that I went to bed I did not disturb the following discussion on the French as a colonizing nation . . . . . Allingham loves the student life in Paris and lives only for art. He spends money freely when he has any and is accustomed to weeks and months with barely enough to subsist upon. He cares so little for practical economy that he would spend his last twenty franc pieces in hiring a cab to ride around the Bois de Boulogne so as to have the complete satisfaction that his money was all gone and that it would give him no trouble as to the best way in which he could make it last. But A. has never earned the money himself and is somewhat to [sic] lazy to be diligent and industrious. I like to listen to discourses on the necessity of a very high state of civilization and culture in order that artists can exist. They exist nevertheless, and, judging from some of their works, I would say that many of them belong in the next century as the people of today are not intelligent enough to appreciate their efforts.

James Roger diary entry
24th (Saturday)
Dull but dry clouding down in afternoon. David down town on roads. Rafuse got his leg broke by a stone wilst men were blasting in sand hole. I raked some leaves in morning and watered lot (Gordon’s) then pulled rutabagas till dinner when Walter Hardy brought them in. Got telephone from express office in Greenville saying that Hamish was not coming tonight. Got letter from Alice and papers. Flag raising down town this afternoon at post office corner. Got letter from Hamish at night saying that there had been a rearrangement of the staff and he was laid off for a time, but was going to Boston on Monday to see the American Express Co. and try for a position with them.
