William Jurian Kaula diary
26 MAR 1898
There is but little for me to do. The weather is still bad and I spent the afternoon at Lee's studio where I could keep warm and nurse my cold. Everybody is talking about the Salons. The pictures have been sent and the jury is at work at the Champs Ellysees. The Champ de Mars have not received all the works yet. We went to the Café Rouge in the evening to hear the music. I saw Mr. Swe___ there and told him that it was all nonsense to go out in the country to paint during such weather or at this time of the year. He said that Mr. Dearth wrote to him and said that it was no use to come to Crécy until better weather. I was in Moret at this time last year. See journal of March 25 of 1897 and read how the fruit trees were in blossom, etc. Why there is hardly a sign of green leaves in Crécy or at Moret now for that matter, least to see all my things covered with dirt even if they were not being used.

James Roger diary entry
26th (Friday)
Slight frost, fairly good sun heat, ice melting slowly, westerly winds. David fixed up ice chest, and picked over potatoes in cellar. I filled boiler and went for mail. Got letter from Hamish who is now doing a lot of office work. Corbett fixed up back door of Church this afternoon, gave great talk on Church matters when he brought key.
With Re to the country club it seems that a building was there in 1740 based on this sentence from Chandler's book. " Jonas Woolson had re-
turned from his winter sojourn in Littleton, Mass., and may
have been at work preparing a home for his future wife where
now stands the home of the Country Club, or he may have
been in company with Benjamin Hoar, who had come with
similar purpose to the next lot toward the river.
Kaula complains of dust on his stuff even when no one has been in his studio. I'm guessing it's due to the dirt roads at the time. We had the same problem living on River Rd in the 50s.
I would not have recognized that photo as the Souhegan Country Club. As a kid the 4th of July fireworks I experienced most years was at the Country Club.
