Cyanotype print photography was developed in 1842. It involves using photo-sensitive iron compounds which are exposed to ultraviolet (sun) light. The blue color is “fixed” using plain water which removes the compounds not converted to Prussian Blue. The reader might be familiar with making “sun prints” with a commercially available children’s art toy. The Society has several cyanotype prints. The man in this one is not identified.

James Roger diary entry - Smoky
23rd (Wednesday)
Warm, muggy, smoky day. David & C. Whittemore repairing roads in Cemetery. I filled lamps and swept Hall for Grange tomorrow night. Also lifted the last of my beans out of the garden. David sold reaping machine to Mr. Huckins for same money as he paid for it $350.
Thank you John. I love viewing all these photos and the diaries.
