15th (Saturday)
Fair and cool NW wind. David at Club House. I picked 2 fowls and cut lot in Cemetery. Funeral today of some friend of the Farrar’s. In afternoon, Daniel, Jessie, Alice and I went for hay from meadow at Lowe’s. Cart stuck in soft ground and we had to unload partly. Jessie, Alice and I picked about 11 quarts of blue berries in forenoon. They brought the cows home also.

William Jurian Kaula diary - Paris
PARIS
Once more in the "la ville débauché" as Madam Travet calls it. I made the journey in from Crécy with Misses S. and L. and had the pleasure of driving around through the shopping districts in a voíture* and a chance to leisurely take in the sights of the city as I have not seen it before - under an August sun. Besides I learned much of the mysteries of shopping of which I was totally ignorant and always indifferent.
I found Hazard in a most delapitated [sic] frame of mind and the tale of his woes and sufferings would fill the rest of this book. Surely his imagination plays the most important part of his sufferings and even if it is so he deserves some pity though most of the sympathy he receives only goes to add to his excited nerves. He is so morbidly sensitive that it is difficult to scold him for the want of more courage and self-reliance though I am sure that this is what he needs more than the examinations by the doctors. How can anyone imagine his collapse into a nervous exhaustion in such a quiet place as Voulangis! An analysis of this troubles contain all the symptoms of a homesick boy. His apprehensions of some impending calamity are almost laughable. Yes Arthur is a queer boy and should never have wandered from his paternal hearth. "Ambition should be made of sterner stuff." So as nurse I am not a success and I would rather attempt to console a baby elephant. We will not go to Switzerland.

Our quarters No. 21 Ave. de la Grande Armée ( Google map ) is in the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe. A pension kept by a Scotch woman who shelters a great many tourists and other people. There is a religious air about the place that may be wholesome but not agreeable. There are a lot of servile veterans who can discuss but one topic of Christian work. How long I will be able to endure this sanctimonious atmosphere at meal times will not be long. It rains too hard for much open air exercise.
