William Jurian Kaula diary
1 FEB 1898
Logan purchased a suite of armor when he was in Venice last summer - not original old armor which is very expensive, but a copy from an example in one of the museums. To all purposes it answers as well as if it were genuine as far as appearances are concerned, and no-one wants armor nowadays to wear. We all tried it on to demonstrate that fact. One feels like a walking machine shop inside of it and it would be hardly suitable to wear for a costume at a ball. As for studio furnishings Logan is acquiring some bric-a-brac far more valuable than the average student can afford. He also brought back a splendid cabinet about six feet high and of ancient design. The armor is on a stand in the corner. It was suggested that Glover would put it on and pose in it while the boys went out for Madvig* who was drawing in the evening class upstairs. Madvig was very much interested to see the new purchase and as the light was dim he advanced to inspect it in detail when suddenly the figure came forth with outstretched hand and pike. It nearly frightened Madvig out of his wits, with a dash to get behind Logan and "Mon Dieux!" he comprehended the joke. Then Cartwright put the armor on and Logan went after Madrassi.** Cartwright remained motionless while Madrassi came forward with great interest when an awful yell came forth from the iron mass that made Madrassi jump about ten feet.
*Possibly Einar Madvig, painter?
**Luca Madrassi, sculptor?
Note in margin: It took from November to February for the armor to come from Venice to Paris by "slow freight." It took Logan six hours at the depot to get it through the customs and he paid three francs duty on it as old iron. One is subject to the most aggravating delays over here and besides a lot of red tape business with the officials in getting anything that is subject to duty declared.
