Memorial Day 2022
Thanks to everyone who made our Memorial Day Ceremonies a success. It was a hot day wasn’t it? A special shout out to Pete and BJ Aho who have hosted a morning coffee and nisu social before the morning parade in Smithville. They have been doing this for DECADES.

William Jurian Kaula diary - “missing chickens”
The practical service of the army during the summer months is to travel around the country from town to town and living much at the expense of the inhabitants. We enjoyed the novelty of having a soldier at our table.* He learned to eat vast quanities [sic] of food by his experience in the army and I could in no way compete with his appetite or capacity. I am so glad that I am not subject to the military disipline [sic] and obliged to conform to the red-tape regulations that makes these fellows enjoy anything but a enviable life. They have their fun occasionally but never at liberty to go about as they please. There were a few chickens missing in the neighborhood that made the peasants righteously indignant. I was surrounded by soldiers everywhere I went to-day. The little village of Villiers which has been so tranquil particularly on a Sabbath was full of bustle and hustle of inspections, drills, and emphatic officers.
* There were eight German soldiers quartered at his house during the Franco-Prussian War in the winter of 1869.
Note: The Franco-Prussian War or Franco-German War was a conflict between the Second French Empire and a coalition of German states led by Prussia.
Nice picture of the Preston ladies. Around 1950 my mother took in Mrs. Preston who had become a widow and had sold her property in Bankvillage. She and her husband had owned the beach on Waterloom Pond. I played checkers with her as a boy. I wish I knew her first name. She was in her 70s at the time.
