Fred Stacy Mill
Captioned as Fred Stacy mill, but it must be invisible
James Roger diary entry
5th June 1912
Fair, windy, and cooler; wind westerly. David & Walter finished planting potatoes in forenoon and went to Spoffords’ after. Clifford Newcomb came by auto at 1:30 p.m. and asked D. & W. to ride to Boston; they left about 3:30 p.m. I sowed cabbage, chard, onions, beet, sweet corn, peas in garden. Also, Nasturtiums, Pinks, Coreopsis, Morning Glory & Pansy seeds. Took out 102 chicks out incubator which finishes my hatching for season. Got invitation cards to the Academy graduating class on the 19th.
I have some information about the Fred Stacy mill. It was actually in Ashby, on West Rd., which becomes Ashburnham Rd. At the nearby New Ipswich line. The mill, which sawed lumber and shingles, and pressed cider was on Holt Mill Pond, on the other side of the road from the pond. The mill, Ashby’s last operating water-powered mill, burned in 1941, and arson was suspected. Mt. Watatic is shown past the pond in the photo you shared. - posted on FB by Lee McTighe (Merrilee Herwig)
Fred had 2 mills. One that made shingles, another made cider, both powered by water wheels.
