Marion Davis Audio-Tape Transcriptions
Sometime before her death in 1986, Marion Davis recorded her memories at the encouragement of her brother, Walter Buck. The recordings were transcribed by a secretary.
The Friends of Wapack have made these available to the Historical Society. Marion was born on February 8, 1894 in Fitchburg, MA.
$85 Damage
We went to Rindge and when we got over there the road to the farm was blocked with great pine trees crisscrossing the road. We had to walk around thru the brush to get by those. When we got down to the farm the shingles were all off the main house--every last one cleaned right off and some went off of the barn. Water had run down thru clear into the living room, dining room and kitchen. Then we started for Fitchburg. We went down to a lumber company. One of the men recognized us right away and said, "What is it you've got to have?" There were cars there, little pickup trucks, people in there trying to get things to patch up--windows, shingles and so forth. We told him we'd got to have shingles for the farmhouse; Frank had it all down what he had to have. He said," But I want about 5 bundles to take home with me to patch up some roof" so we got what we needed and started back. They said they would probably be up the next day or the day after anyway. So we went home and we had quite a job jacking up the corner of the garage so that Miss Sweat--that was the one that was companion to Miss Holz, the one in the wheel- chair. She backed her car out; she wasn't afraid to; she knew we had propped it up so it would hold. Both cars had the same break and both had been insured against hurricanes. There was an $85 damage to both cars, which the insurance covered. They went home to Newton Highlands right after that so that we could get to work on the damages done.
