Stagecoach Tavern from 1771 to 1826
BENJAMIN WILLIAMS came here from Concord, Mass., in 1771 and settled on the abandoned Rindge road west of the mountain. He built a large two-story house in shape much like the one now owned by Mrs. Gozzaldi. It was wonderfully well built, every timber being of oak. It was torn down about the time the Merriam Tavern was and was sold for old lumber. It was an old Stage Tavern and was there quite a while before the Merriam and Batchelder Taverns were built. It was probably a Tavern from 1771 to about 1826 as the name disappears from the records at that time. This place was later known as the Heywood place. Some years after it was torn down, a George Wright built a small house on the site of the old one.
Thayer Family Photo Album
A selection from a photo album donated by the Thayer Family. Three men in what appears to be a hardware store. If you can identify them please leave a comment. Men dressed more formally in what I suppose was the early 1960s.
Formulas
Stephen A. Thayer’s “One Hundred Formulas” was published in 1883. It contains recipes from everything from printing ink to pain killers. Another formula which contains lead but no opium.
WARNING: Please don’t try any of these “remedies”, many contain ingredients which have been shown to be harmful.
