NEW IPSWICH 1934 Historical Society Meeting The Historical society had its quarterly meeting last week. Mrs. Bertha Preston presided. Mrs. Abby Phelps, secretary, had prepared a paper, which was read by Mrs. Ralph Taylor. The paper was a memorial of Rev. Stephen Farrar, pastor of the first church in the town. His death occurred 125 years ago. The curator, Mrs. McLaughlin had prepared a plan of the old church and it was exhibited while the paper was read. Beside the drawing was a foot-warmer such as was used in olden days. The first building was on Prospect hill. In 1718 John Fitch was captured by the Indians. The people fled to Townsend and on their return found their church had been burned, presumably by the Indians. In 1757 the second church was finished. It was 32 by 22 feet. Stephen Farrar was ordained and remained their pastor for 50 years. In the meantime the building was found to be too small and another was erected, 60 by 45 feet. It was not painted and there were no fires or lights. In 1816 this structure was made into a town hall and academy, and a fourth church was built. Officers elected for the ensuing year are as follows: President Mrs. Anne Thayer. Vice president Mrs. Jennie Patterson. Second vice president Miss Caroline Lowe. Secretary-treasurer Mrs. Abby L. Phelps. Curator-Mrs. McLaughlin.
