HILMA STARK REMINISCES:
LYDIA ELEANOR – born Apr. 27, 1914
Lydia was next to the oldest girl and the “Mother” of the brood. Whenever Mother called for a babysitter when she had to go into the barn to milk the cows, it was Lydia who answered the call. The rest of us didn’t hear too good. She seemed to be more accident prone than the rest of us. I remember her suffering a huge carbuncle on her leg and trying to pick blueberries while in terrific pain. She was afraid to go down to the shack for fear of reprisal. Also, when the measles went around the neighbor- hood (we had no inoculations for these diseases at that time) she and Walter suffered through “Black Measles” while the rest of us skimmed through the measles in one day. She was very ill for at least two weeks and almost didn’t make it and so was Walter. At that time, we were not aware of the after effects of measles so we were spared that worry, at least, and luckily were not left with any lasting defects. Lydia was more conscientious in helping out with housework than Maria and I. While we played outdoors or went for long hikes with our next door neighbor, Gertrude, she was inside helping Mother. She was good in school and loved to write. We were all good students, especially in Math. Lydia was forever dyeing clothes with elderberry juice and everything had a purplish tint in those days.
Reminisces from Hilma Stark (b. 1917) who grew up in New Ipswich. She was sister to the late Elmer Stark who lived at the family place on Fox Farm Road (uncle of Sharon Anderson Rosenfelder). (probably recorded in the late 1970’s)
