James Roger diary entry
1st March 1913
Cloudy morning with showers during the day; also thunder and lightning about noon. The Mansfield boys sawed our wood today (7 1/2 cords); also three cords at Gordons’. I saw two crows this morning. There was a good turn out at the Ladies’ night of the Men's Club, about 50 altogether. The Town and School warrants were afterwards discussed by a number of speakers. David spoke quite frequently and will also Miss Birtwell and Mr. Tobey of Temple. Closed at 11 PM. Moses Balch keeping comfortable. Got letters from Hamish and May; also Prescott and Tele. Co.
The Mansfield boys described by James Roger surely were made of sterner stuff if they sawed 10 1/2 cords of wood in one day.
And were the Hardys and Mr. Parmenter wearing LL Bean-type boots in the photo?
Life was challenging 100+ years ago. Irving Taylor dying from TB and Edna his wife dying after childbirth, both of them in their 20s. As usual I enjoy reading James Roger's simple observations. Seeing 2 crows, showing appreciation for letters and pc's, showing concern for the welfare of family and friends, etc, shows the James has his priorities right..
