James C. Barr with his dog
Apparently all was not civil in the Barr household. Bill Niemi sent us this newspaper clipping about two women fighting over James.

No official news of the battle has been received from Manilla [sic]. We are sure that he has done his work with thoroughness - In the Atlantic the squadrons have not yet met - All eyes are waiting news of another engagement with eager interest. The blockade of Cuba is kept up without any serious trouble. No formidable invasion of Cuba will be made until we are masters of the sea. The whole course of events depends upon naval strategy. Grave troubles have arisen in Spain which gives that government much concern in their own land. There is much talk about the United States keeping the Phillipeans [sic] and adopting a new scheme of Foreign Policy. It would work a revolution in our Republic in this new departure, once which we have always avoided and probably will in this case. The French papers are amusing, the Figaro says, speaking of the disaster at Manilla [sic], that Spain "knows how to extract victory from the very depths of defeat." American papers, which I received this week are the most astonishing and sensational looking journals that I ever saw. Huge headlines sometimes run across the sheet, and in some cases a whole page is used up with one great black-lettered announcement. Every detail is magnified into columns and the speculations of what may happen occupy page after page. I only see two newspapers printed in English, one from Paris and the other from London - both contain everything that is worth printing.
James Roger diary entry

Dull and rainy; wind southeast to east. Robert Walker came running in at 5:45 to say that the brooder house was on fire and did good work carrying water. Dave and him had it out before help came (D. Maynard, W & A. Hardy) Over 100 chickens roasted and suffocated. Not much damage done to building. Three broken windows and roof burned through in spots. W. A. Preston came and inspected the place for assessment of damage. Dave fixed up the place after in a temporary way. Got letter from Hamish.
