A Peculiar Character
John Augustus Johnson was a peculiar character in town for many years. That is the opinion of Abbie L. Phelps. That is what she wrote on the back of this photo when she donated it to the New Ipswich Historical Society. It raises many questions doesn’t it?
Leon R, Willard, the town photographer, painter and chicken farmer took the following photo of “peculiar” John in 1896.
An earlier Schoolhouse #6
In a previous posting I posted this photo of Schoolhouse #6 taken in 1948
Apparently there was an earlier Schoolhouse #6 located beyond Smithville (South) Cemetery near the old Chandler Place, wherever that might be.

History of New Ipswich, In youth he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was upon the first frigate entering the harbor of San Fransisco just before the Mexican War in which he did service.
