William Jurian Kaula diary
30 JAN 1898
The concour (concours) for prizes at Julian's today was the worst exhibition of work that I have yet seen at that school. Surely this has been an off year for the Julian Academy. You have only to look at the prize works and compare them with the examples of other times on the walls. The best works are hung every month when there is a concour [sic]. There are no stars at Julian's this summer, not even in drawing from life which is usually very strong. The paintings from the nude were dirty and black in color and most of them look more like the post-mortem appearance of flesh rather than paintings from a living model. I have not missed much or made a mistake by not going to Julian's school this winter.

James Roger diary entry
30th (Saturday)
Stormy day wind N.E. to N.W. Snow showers and drifting a little. David teaming from mountain to Depot. I made out Selectmen’s accounts and went to Engine Hall with them in the afternoon. George Sargent went over the sidewalk in the afternoon. Got letter from Alice and pc from Hamish, also papers from Roslin.
Attractive couple. John looks young for his job. Is John's wife wearing a pocket watch? David is 'teaming' again.
