Death of John Herbert
John Herbert, a former principal of Appleton academy, died Sunday, March 29, at his home in Winchester, Mass.
He was born in Wentworth, N. H., In November, 1949, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Herbert. He was graduated from Boston English high school in 1861 and from Dartmouth college in 1871.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert came to New Ipswich and began their housekeeping in an apartment of Rev. Samuel Lee's house in September, 1871, and Mr. Herbert was assistant teacher in Appleton academy but as the principal, Mr. Westgate, wished to leave, the trustee of the Institution were advised to put Mr. Herbert in his place as principal of the academy. which they did
He was a fine teacher in the classroom a good disciplinarian, and ever promoted religious atmosphere in his school; but his duties proved too heavy for so young a man and he left in June 1874, and began the study of law. in his father's office, and was admitted to the New Hampshire bar in 1875,
About the same time Mr. Herbert decided to study for the ministry as he had been advised to attend Andover Theological seminary when in entered the seminary in 1875
In 1876 he accepted a call from the Congregational church at Stoughton, Mass. Albert Percy, a native of this town, was a former pastor of that church. In a few years, on account of a throat trouble, he was advised to give up public speaking, and so was obliged to abandon the work that he enjoyed.
After leaving Stoughton he went abroad for ever a year. On returning he opened a law office in Boston, taking up the practice of law in 1850 and making his home in Somerville where he resided until four years as, when he went to Winchester to live.
Mr. Herbert had many vocations He was president of the Appleton Academy association, of which he was originator. For years he was an active Republican, organizer and president of the Somerville Municipal league, president of the Boston Congregational club, president of the Appalachian Mountain club, a director of the Merchants' Cooperative bank of Boston, and a member of the Boston, Massachusetts and American Bar association. He was admitted to practice in the supreme court of the United States.
Mr. Herbert was one of the founders of the old Broadway Congregational church, now the Broadway Winter Hill Congregational church, Somerville, Mass.
Mr. Herbert leaves, his wife, Blanche E. Herbert; two sons, John Herbert, Jr., of West Somerville, and Carl Guy Herbert of Waltham, Mass., and a brother, Henry W. Herbert of Rumney, N. H. and Orlando, Fla. The funeral was held from the Winter Hill church Tuesday afternoon. Rev Howard Chidley of the Winchester Congregational church and Rev Rev. K. K. Haddaway Winter Hill Congregational of the church officiated. Burial was in Mount Auburn cemetery.

Cold, raw day, wind west to north west. Mr. Lord preached from text: "Ye shall know the truth, etc." S. S. after. 15 children present. 10 Seniors. Collection: 74 cents. No evening service. I wrote asking Alice to come for a few weeks as mother is not getting better. New moon this afternoon.
