Death of John M. Burton
John M. Burton, who died March 15 at the Peterboro hospital, was born in Temple, N. H., May 9, 1866, the second son of Dexter and Emily F. Burton. He was educated in the schools of New Ipswich.
When he was 21 years old he went to Boston and graduated from Burdett Business college. His older brother, George D. Burton, had invented and patented the Burton stock car, and had formed the Burton Stock Car Co. and John M. Burton was sent to Wichita, Kan., in charge and superintendent of the Burton works at that place, where he remained for some time. He invented a steel freight car and a palace sleeping car. He was married Dec. 7, 1893, in Middletown, Pa, to Miss Blanch Campbell, returning to Boston, where they lived two years, he filling several lucrative positions there.
He then returned to this town, where he lived 12 years. After his father's death in 1896 he moved to the Burton farm in Temple, where he built a house and managed a large fruit ranch, selling quantities of plums, peaches, apricots, pears, cherries and apples.
Mr. and Mrs. Burton had five sons and four daughters. They were Dorothy, Lincoln. Janice, Jack, Marguerite. Richard, Lorine, Joseph and Milton Burton. A daughter Marguerite died a few years ago, and a son. Mr. Burton's namesake, died in 1910.
After a number of years, Mr. Burton sold the fruit farm and purchased apartment property in Reading, Mass. Later he returned to New Ipswich and bought the Greenman property, where he and family since resided.
The children are married except two young sons, who live at home. Mr. Burton was postmaster in this
town for two years, being appointed by the government to that office in 1918, after which he turned his attention to gardening, working for James C. Barr four year and later for William Kaula as gardener at the summer home in Bank Village, He was a great lover flowers and was called a "wizard" in producing asters and other flowers.
Mr. Burton had a list of friends in the community.
He is survived by he wife and seven children, and a niece Mrs. Walter S. Thayer.
The funeral was Held Monday afternoon at the Baptist church. Rev. Stanley Holton officiated. Burial was in the New cemetery at Temple.

Fair and warm; wind variable west to southeast; heavy dews in morning. David and W. Hardy at Spoffords’ in afternoon. Mother brighter today but weak. Dr. called in morning and left some diarrhea mixture. Got letter from Alice but no word of coming. Got letter from Hamish. Lewis Wilkinson’s mother was buried in the afternoon.
