I have no idea why anyone would take such an uninteresting photo. This was captioned “Johnson Store in Bank Village”. I assume it fell down shortly after the photos was taken.

William Jurian Kaula diary
1 APR 1898
These bright days fill me with a great enthusiasm for nature and I am out morning and afternoon to see the effects. I have made many studies, some were quite satisfactory in a way of progress. It is a total revolution for me to follow in Mr. Dearth's footsteps. He picks everything I do to pieces and tells me what I do not get and why I must study in nature. Beautiful schemes of color, agreeable lines of composition, simplicity of handling, and a keen observation for fleeting effects at twilight are not accomplishments that are acquired in two weeks or even in a summer.
The situation between the United States and Spain is growing daily more intricate. Congress has been held in check by the President and he still controls the situation, but to do so he is obliged to follow Congress rather than to lead it. Congress is rabid and wishes to be very emphatic with Spain. Will Spain yield to such demands as to concede the absolute independence of Cuba, to evacuate the Island, and to consent to a cessation of hostilities? There is a strong movement for peace but can war be averted if Spain refuses to the demands from America. The main question of the explosion has been thus far kept in the background and is not one of the issues. The situation is very critical especially as Spain considers the demands of the United States as pretentious, unfair, and unjustified, and therefore unacceptable by Spaniards. All Europe realizes that Spain haws mismanaged Cuba from the beginning and none will give any aid save platonic sympathies and offers of their "good offices" if acceptable to both parties. Here in France we Americans would naturally expect some sympathy from our sister republic. Republic? France is still used to the ways of monarchies and the "rights of sovereignty," besides America is too prosperous to be anything but envied. All foreign powers do to take kindly to the foreign policy of the U.S. especially in matters that deal with the colonies in the Western Hemisphere.
I little expected to write about the affairs in America while I was here in France but the prospect of a war naturally engages my attention daily to my native land. These, too, are busy days of activity in Crécy in my own small sphere which prevents me from writing daily as much as I would like it I could devote the time. My brief and superficial account of the affairs of the day will lack local color and interest for a time, but to choose and arrange the odd bits that I might wish to write about takes time.

I found it an interesting photo because the store was being supported by a column of rocks which took over from the rotten post. It tells me the store wasn't doing well. The Kaula diary was interesting. I knew little about the Spanish American war and this was informative. The Roger's diary was longer than usual. Did the Mass bank pay more interest?
