William Jurian Kaula diary
29 MAR 1898
The war scare in America is growing worse. The president has sent his message to Congress treating on the disaster to the Maine. The court of inquiry found that the explosion was external and probably caused by a mine. The court was unable to fix the responsibility.* News comes of active preparations for war by both nations, the buying of war vessels, fortifying the coast and seaports, and manufacturing of war material. Here in France the sympathy is with Spain. One would imagine that they would be in sympathy with a sister republic, but no, France is only a republic in name. The people are still used to the ways of monarchies and rulers. We are accused of interfering with another power - that it is not of our affair. So says most of the other continental powers. Oh, these virtuous powers, they never meddle with others and it is not in the cause of humanity either. What is going on in China? Poor China is destined to be grabbed and divided. Did the powers try to stop the massacres in Turkey? How many powers dictated in the war of Greece last year? I sincerely hope that war will be averted but if it is to come it will be an object lesson for both the United States and Europe. France would like to offer its "good offices" in the way of arbitration but as France is violently in favor of Spain. The habitual impartiality of the other powers except England is enough for America to avoid intervention, meditation, or arbitration.
*A synopsis of the Report of the Spanish Commission of Inquiry into the Main disaster has been sent to Washington. It is directly opposite to the conclusions of the Am. Commission.

James Roger diary entry
30th (Tuesday)
Frosty morning, fine day, cloudy with cool west and N.W. winds. David choring round in forenoon, and helping Lonie in afternoon. I took away some leaves from south end of house and at back door. Found sillas peeping through and periwinkle green. Mr. Travis called in morning to talk over Church affairs. Got long letter from Hamish last night, also one from Mrs. Spofford who comes on 8th. I went up to Mrs. Amee’s and found it just as she left it. Got letters from Berkley today. Grange meeting postponed till tomorrow night.
That's how I remember the Kaula house but with larger trees around it. Kaula's diary comments today are interesting. I was surprised that Spain did no accept responsibility for the Maine disaster. So, we went to war on an assumption.
