William Kaula and Lee Lufkin apparently owned three houses in Bank Village. The house now owned by Louise DePapa and Stan Zabierek was one of them. This photo from the Society collection is undated, perhaps 1980s?

I made an attempt at painting an effect of huge grey rolling clouds.  I had great difficulties with the wind, some rain, and a few bursts of sunlight which forced me to work with a rapidity that I never equaled before.  Mr. D. wants to see me try to paint all these fleeting effects and to work away from things more common and ordinary which I had painted so much in the past because I could work on them longer.  I had an amusing experience while in a large pasture this morning.  A cow which had been following me as I entered the field suddenly charged forward and gave me but little time to climb over a fence with all my sketching materials.

The War Cloud grows thicker.  This promises to be a week of historical events.  There is now some talk of meditation by the Pope.  His Holiness has been much interested in the Cuban conflict in sympathy with the Queen Regent.  The Queen is related to the Austrian throne ad they have been using influence to prevail upon the other European powers to offer friendly intervention.  "Spaniards," says a Spanish Ambassador, "are born soldiers of unconquerable toughness, while the American navy consists of mercenaries unused to war.  Therefore, we do not fear war.  The people and the army, indeed, long for it.  Our soldiers in Cuba pant for an encounter with a real enemy," etc.

Fine day, westerly wind.  Mr. Peacock preached on “What a good man should be” a fairly good congregation.  S.S. after present 10 in all.  C.E.  at night topic “Proverbs”  Mrs. Aldrich leader 17 present Coal fire not lit today in Church.
