James Roger diary entry
9th April 1913
Hard frost, 14 degrees, cold north wind. David went to Browns' to prune trees but wind too cold to work, so Walter Hardy and him put in our wood. I went to mail and got letters from Alice saying she was coming tonight and from Hamish who is well, but Miss Rubino was not quite so well. Also from Mrs. Whitman of New York with check in payment of Col. Whitman’s lot in Cemetery. I fixed a brooder in afternoon. We telephoned Berkeley that Alice was coming. Alice came by late train.
Excellent photo.
Little Madeline may have had appendicitis and before antibiotics there was always the risk of peritonitis. The fact that it took a few days for her to succumb fits this scenario. A terrible tragedy. Willis was the man in white in the photo..
