William Jurian Kaula diary
18 MAY 1898
I am making drawings of various composition s where I expect to paint several twilights. Some of the subjects are near Crécy and can be easily reached when the proper effect comes on. Another is on the hill overlooking a part of La Chapelle and some of the valley. Owing to the amount of detail in this last one, I shall probably paint ity just as it is growing dark so as to loose the forms into soft masses. Twilights afford a great variety, there is more scope for choice of color and scheme, for harmony, more opportunities for tone, of agreeable effects of mystery, and subtle painting. What's more, everyone is more or less fond of twilight and works of this kind are much more pleasing and understood than many of the startling effects of the day that are now produced in the modern clever technique that puzzles the general public. Those artists - the painters of strong sunlight - often scoff at the men who paint twilights and call such productions "pot boilers," because they sell and are appreciated by all people who know little or nothing about painting.
