In 2004, Dennis Gauvin took photos of various historical sites in New Ipswich on his mail route. The following photo was labeled “Maki Farm”. Was it the same location? If you have information, please leave a comment. Thanks.

James Roger diary entry
30th (Saturday)
Warm and muggy, with heavy torrential rains at night. Memorial days, the usual performance but tamer every year. Mr. Gale gave a very fine address. Jim went to meet Hamish at night.

William Jurian Kaula diary - Decoration Day
PART OF MY LETTER TO CARTWRIGHT IN LEMINGTON, ENGLAND
This is Decoration Day and there are no graves of the old Grand Army men to be covered with flowers in this vicinity and I shall not see the annual parade of the vetrans [sic] on their way to the cemetary [sic], or no barges of school children singing the national hymns. I know of no other way to observe the day unless it is to persuade our madam to provide more than the usual amount of food at dinner and thereby show her respect for the great and glorious stars and stripes which are, on this day, being at half-mast throughout our noble land, while tender remberances [sic] are being uttered and eulogies being pronounced at the sacred memorial services in the churches and - well this will not do for you in England and I must change my tune to "God save the Queen" and may she outlive the oldest inhabitant in that tight little isle!...
As yet we can report no masterpieces inspired by the scenery of Voulangis, except a few that I thought would be better to conceal under a layer of white paint rather than to spring it upon the world in this generation. After I have painted several new things over each they may someday appeal to the public and as each successive layer peels off a new beauty will come to light with a freshness that will ______ the old paintings found in Pompeian [Pompeiian] ruins after being securely sealed from daylight for a few centuries. "Last night the nightingale warbled"* and was assisted in her concert by a chorus of the young brood who made as much noise as our famous grand opera at Moret. This bird which the poets feign sings the melodies that are so delightful and captivating and with such a charm as to steal away the senses and produce a sort of an enchantment that holds the listner [sic] spellbound. But when the "rossingol" began to sing "Tell me that you love me, that the sweetest, saddest story ever told,"* I went into raptures and wept at the tender thoughts and memories that awakened in my bosom.
* Two sentimental songs that Miss O and Miss B. used to sing every evening at Moret.
Note: Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day, originally honored the women and men who lost their lives during the American Civil War. Per www.history.com, "On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Civil War soldiers buried in the cemetery."
