William Jurian Kaula diary
13 FEB 1898
Tanner came up to see Lee's portraits. He did not have much to say as he is not a portrait painter and his remarks did not disclose anything new to Lee. Tanner is painting a large picture for thee Salon and invited us to come and see it. His "Ressurection [sic] of Lazurus [sic]" which was purchased by the State at the last Salon has not been hung yet and we all hope that it will find a place in the Luxumburg. Tanner went to the Holy Land last summer and found material for the picture which he is now painting. His expenses on that trip were defrayed by an Englishman named Bodington who took an interest in Tanner. He also too Tanner to England to paint portraits but Tanner was not equal to the occasion. Tanner's fame is mostly due to the fact that he is a colored man and it is something unusual for one of his race to achieve any success in painting. He is very popular at the Men's Club and serves on all the exhibition committees. He fins it much easier to get along in France than in America where the race distinction is so strong and against him. It is rather hard for him when young ladies (Americans, especially Southerners) refuse to meet him as he is a most unassuming and modest man. Tanner has good ideas and ability to make a good composition for a picture, and a good feeling for color if it is in low tones. He has a very vigorous technique and uses lots of pigment. He is not a strong draughtsman [sic] and his work still lacks in want of delicacy and fineness of character. But he is making rapid strides and may keep up the gait which brought him so quickly to the front.

James Roger diary entry
13th (Thursday)
Drizzly day. David not out today. Busy painting pung (?). I fixed Hall for Grange tonight. 1 + 2 degree on Mr. Whiting. Some discussion about use of dishes for Odd Fellows.
The Alice in this photo is the little girl. We believe she is Ruth Robbins.
My neighbor to the south is a Buck with a family farm on Buck road. Another landowner north of me is a Davis. Interesting coincidence or does every town have Buck and Davis families? In any case I'm willing to bet you won't find James (or David) at the top of Barrett Mt wearing a white shirt and tie.
It seems like we have 2 groups of people being depicted in this newsletter, 1 group with more leisure time than the other.
