Death of Miss Wright
Maude Evangeline Wright, who died Saturday, May 2, at her home in Inglewood, Calif., was the daughter of Levi and Angelia (Gibson) Wright, and was born in Townsend, Mass., May 8, 1876. She had pronounced musical ability, having started her musical career at an early age with her mother, who was a professional musician.
Miss Wright was in musical vaudeville under the team name of "Nelson and Day" (Maude E. Wright and George W. Wilson), playing in all parts of this country, Canada and South America. She was musical director of an act which left New York city in 1921 for Peru, South America. There they played for the government of Peru in the big pleasure park of Lima.
In 1926 they went to California, where they played; also to Washington, Oregon and Arizona.
Miss Wright belonged to the National Vaudeville Artists' and Actors' association for many years. She continued her stage work until prevented by illness in December, 1908. She gave music lessons till within four weeks of her death.
Funeral services were held May 5. The Baptist minister of Inglewood officiated and the National Artists' association, conducted a special service.
Miss Wright's brother, Harry Gibson Wright, died Feb. 24, 1929, in Yucaipa, Calif. His wife, Mabelle Wright, was with her the last weeks of her life. An aunt, Mrs. Nettie Gibson Scales, lives in Leominster, Mass.
EDITORS NOTE:
I was not certain of the New Ipswich connection with Miss Wright or why this obituary is in our collection. We have this postcard. Carl Toko has some answers.
Carl Toko found this explanation:
Joseph Augustus Gibson was a painter living at Gibson Village in the house just south of the milltown. His children constituted a very musical family, some of his daughters forming a concert troupe known as the Gibson sisters. One daughter Angelia married Dr. William Whalley one of her daughters was Maude. Angela was born in 1838, Maude was born 1876. - History of New Ipswich

James Roger diary entry
15th May 1913
Frost slight; fine day; wind west. Mother had a poor night, suffering a good deal of pain. Doctor came and gave her hypodermic injection, which relieved her. Also, in forenoon he brought a liniment which made her very comfortable. She moved into front room. Got telegram from Alice that she is coming on Saturday night. Also postcard from Hamish. David stayed around the place today. I picked four fowls, which he dressed. Frank Hirck (Hyck?) at Spoffords’ in forenoon and cut John Preston’s lawn in afternoon. Mrs. Lena Preston sent up some corn juice and pineapple syrup, which mother enjoyed very much. Sewing Circle today got parcel of bread from May.
Thank you, Carl, for that info.
