William Jurian Kaula diary
The peaceful community of Voulangis was somewhat disturbed by the arrival of a portion of a battery of the French Artillery. The inhabitants are obliged to find shelter and food for both men and horses. The surrounding towns are also overrun with the rest of the battery. One soldier will live at our house and another next door with two horses. The inhabitants are given about one day's notice in which to have time to make any preparations that are necessary. Our guest proved to be an agreeable fellow, and I think that he will fare very much better at Madam Travet's than his comrades will among the average peasant. I had soon visions of seeing some manoevres [sic] and perhaps a brilliant military spectacle but was dissapointed [sic]. To see these fellows turn into a set of hostlers and clean harnesses, carry water and do other chores and then loaf around the streets added a new feature to our country life.
Yep...Mr. Kaula is definitely a snob. I think I'd rather stay with the peasants.
