William Jurian Kaula diary
While decending [sic] the hill to Crécy with my sketching materials I came across a few soldiers concealed in the bushes by the roadside. They handled their guns so expectantly that I concluded that they were looking for trouble. Three horses were tied in shelter to trees. One of them informed me that some dragoons were approaching and that they intended to intercept their progress. I grasped the situation and knew that these were the skirmishes in advance of some troops on a maneovre [sic]. So I kept on my way and as the horsemen swept around the curve the soldiers opened fire. The dragoons retreated around the curve and subjected me to an examination as I reached them. I told them about the three soldiers, as I had not seen the troops coming on the hill. I replied that there were no more. With a beautiful military salute I went on. The dragoons acting on my information dashed up the old road up the hill and must have fallen into a trap as four hundred horsemen arrived in Voulangis immediately. This is the way they play at war and learn the best methods of killing off the imaginary foe.
What a guy...Kaula leads the soldiers right into an ambush. I hope he was on the right side.
