Fair and warm with good breeze. Mr. Lord preached, and Mr. Samuel Lee assisted in the services by reading the scripture lesson and offering prayer. I was not at service as Hamish was going at 11 o'clock. Mother had a good, comfortable day. S. S. after church service. Both S. S. and church thinly attended as the Memorial Day is observed at Temple. Evening service at seven but few there. S. S. Collection: $.23. I wrote to Roslin.

Modern Scottish Poets, Third Edition - D.H. Edward 1881
EVENING CHIMES "Tis by struggling men grow noble, Trampling on unworthy things ; Gathering up the misspent moments Precious pearls on golden strings. Looking upwards, ever heavenwards, Like the spire of God's own house ; Casting worldly cares behind us, Praising God with cheerful voice. Then droop not in the weary conflict, God will help you on your way ; And, in hours of dark temptation, Hopefully and humbly pray. Though adversities surround thee, Still press onward, do not fear ; And though vanquished in thy sorrow God will wipe the falling tear. Look with loving gaze to Jesus, Kingly author of our faith ; Present aid in every trouble, Comforter in hour of death. Oh, look upwards, ever heavenwards, Listen to his gracious word ; They are blest, for ever blest, Who wait and rest upon the Lord.
