William Jurian Kaula diary
28 Dec 1897
I had heard much about the "Rag Fair" which is held between Christmas and New Year near or around Les Halles - it was a dissapointment [sic] as I had heard of the marvelous bargains in all sorts of bric-a-brac and odds-and-ends. There was much trash on sale, but as the rain was falling most of the dealers covered up their wares and so I did not see much. The Halles Centrales are the largest of the markets in Paris. It is a huge low building of iron and covers over twenty acres, intersected by several streets which are covered where they run through. The life around this market is of unusual interest from the early hours of the morn when the provisions begin to arrive to throughout the day when the place is alive with people and customers. Everything to eat is sold here besides flowers and things that belong to the dry goods and hardware trade. Near the market is the large church of St. Eustach which was built during the sixteenth century and is now black and weatherbeaten [sic] though in most excellent state of preservation. As a piece of architecture it is sadly mixed up and without any special effect. The inside is very lofty and of the usual effective Gothic pillars and arches with large stained-glass windows which were not very beautiful in color.

James Roger diary entry
28th (Monday)
Frost 6 degrees, growing colder wind west. David choring round in forenoon as Pete stubbed his foot in the woods on Saturday and is still too lame. Daniel and him went to Greenville in afternoon and bought several things at Hartshorn’s sale. Got letter from Hamish today who has not got his grip yet. Also paper from Scotland.
