Mrs. Lena Brooks Preston.
Mrs. Lena Brooks Preston, daughter of the late Fred A. and Helen (Mansur) Brooks, and widow of Frederic Preston, died suddenly Tuesday night of a heart attack. She is survived by an only daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Preston James, who has cared for her mother for many years.
Mrs. Preston was a person of highest character, a true friend, be- loved by everyone; a very lovely lady. She was identified with the church, a member of the Social Benevolent Society, the Parent- Teacher association, and John Ev- erett Chapter O. E. S.
For several years after marriage and until her husband's death Mrs. Preston lived in New York City but most of her life has been spent in New Ipswich.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Congregational church.

James Roger diary entry
4th July 1913
There and warm. Bell ringing and cracker firing began about 12:30 AM, a very feeble turn out. About 10 AM the Ashby band played up the street as far as the church and were accompanied by some young women carrying the banner with Woman Suffrage on it. Also some children dressed as Horribles and looking very dusty and uncomfortable. David finishing cutting F. Hardy’s hay. Alice and I took out the settees out the Hall in the morning. David and Lonie went downtown in afternoon. Dance in Hall tonight; pretty noisy lot. Fired crackers all the time; also left a lot of ice cream plates and spoons all over the lot.
Horribles Parades are quite a tradition in parts of New England. It’s been going on down here in Gloucester MA for many years, for example. All part of Glorious Fourth partygoers behaving badly throughout the generations.
Sounded like they had a great celebration that night.
