New Ipswich Appleton Academy
New Ipswich Appleton Academy was founded in 1789, and is the second oldest in New Hampshire. The present building was erected in 1853. In its best days, the academy has enrolled 200 pupils, but since the multiplication of free high schools, the membership of the institution has steadily decreased. Within three years under the stimulus of re-awakened interest on the part of loyal alumni, the old school has been imbued with new life. It has instituted the entrance examination system, admitting only pupils proficient in the entire course of instruction covered by the grammar schools. It has received the approval of the superintendent of public instruction of New Hampshire. Through the generosity of the alumni a completely equipped scientific laboratory, a reference library, new blackboards and other furnishings have been added within two years. The cellar is to be drained and cemented, hard wood floors laid and the Massachusetts system of heating and ventilation is to be put in. The membership has been steadily increasing for three years, and now enrolls pupils from several towns.
Portrait
Undated portrait from the Burton Family albums which were donated by Dennis Gauvin. If you know who, leave a comment.
The albums were something to see. They were ornate and very heavy.
Formulas
Stephen A. Thayer’s “One Hundred Formulas” was published in 1883. It contains recipes from everything from printing ink to pain killers.
