Construction of Church
The first Congregational Church was burnt after being struck by lightning on July 15, 1902. A second church was built on the same piece of property, where it remains to this day.

The crowd at Creuset's remains the same with a few additions including Leavitt and his partner Peckwell. This last fellow is a curious type for this crowd. He is a Christian Endeavor man and likes to boast of his virtues when he proudly says that he never smoked or drank a drop in his life and did not swear. He is naturally very conspicuous for his virtues in a place like this among fellows from all parts of the globe who know each other by their good qualities without having them pointed out. So of course when our new friend complains about too much smoke in the restaurant there is an unexplainable increase in the density of the atmosphere. Our friend said with great emotion the other night he "was at the Christian Endeavor meeting and he was moved to pray - I got up and did not know what to say but the words came to me and I made a fine prayer. In fact I did so well that a number of ladies came to me after the service and complimented me on my prayer."
Redmond and the other Dutch-Chinese mute have frequent quarrels over the most insignificant things. Recently they got into an argument over bird eggs and an illustration of the same in Harper's Monthly. The result was a challenge to a duel. It never came off. They have had another row this week. The Chinaman drew up a paper of his grievances which he showed to us. Redmond is not a very sensible fellow and is very foolish in refusing to conform somewhat to the desires of the institution in San Francisco that sent him abroad to study. His conduct has been of such a nature that they have refused to supply him with further assistance. One of the boys pays for his meals and gives him a room but that cannot last long.
