William Jurian Kaula diary
I had considerable trouble with the concern that furnished me with the tire for my bicycle and there is little satisfaction to be obtained in dealing with a Frenchman - My wheel appears to be all whole now and I am anxious to return to Crécy. Owing to the rain I was not able to ride out from Paris as I planned. I have a room in the Hotel Poulain.
CRÉCY EN BRIE
Cartwright and the Misses Shuttleworth and Lufkin are here. Miss Lufkin's father is here for a few days on his way from Singapore to his home in Ohio. I left Hazard in what I would call a good condition though I will not be surprised at any new developments of his self-afflicting tourture [sic]. Our quarters here will be more comfortable especially during rainy weather as there is plenty of room - The garden is secluded and full of trees and flowering shrubs and roses that bloom all the summer. In the rear runs a moat spanned by dozens of bridges that lead from the yards to the little street on the other side.
NOTE: Lee Lufkin’s father was a wealthy oil executive.
