Souhegan Country Club - July 28, 1931
Club Has Annual Meeting The Souhegan Country club held its annual meeting July 11 at the club house. Frederick W. Ely was re- elected president, Edwin A. Needham vice-president and Miss L. Pearl Callis, secretary and treasurer.
The club was started in 1899 by William Preston, John Preston, S. C. Heald, H. J. Taft, Edward Marshall, Ralph Parker, John Bemis and Frederick W. Ely. The eight men bought the Leedham house and it has been used as a clubhouse ever since. Of the eight charter members, Mr. Ely is the only one living.
From the piazza there is an extended view of Waterloom pond, Watatic mountain and the New Ipswich and Temple range of hills.
The present membership is 148, which includes residents of this town, Mason, Greenville, Temple and Townsend, most of whom are summer residents.
Ownership of the building was held by the charter members or their heirs until last year, when the club, was incorporated and bought the building. A well was dug last fall and this spring plumbing was put in, so there is running water in the house. The buildings have been painted outside and inside and, with the large screened porch and electric light and telephone, the house is well equipped. There is a tennis court for the younger members.
James Roger diary entries
30th August 1912
Very cold morning; slight frost in some places; fine day; wind northerly. David took Alice, Mary and John to Depot and Roger took their baggage in another wagon. David picking rocks in the incubator field. I cut some lots and went to the Library at 3 p.m. to hear Dr. of Philadelphia speak on the value of Books & Libraries. Got letter last night with announcement of Wm. Dempey’s [possibly Dempsey’s] marriage.
Recent photos posted of individuals from the 1800s are interesting but unfortunately, they depict events way before any time of the present audience. Most must have been of important people (or well-to-do) except for the Willard pics, since he was trying to capture life at that time rather than making a portrait. We need more older people visiting this site.
