News Clipping - Hubbard Bequest to Public Library
The following extract from the will of the late Mrs. Sarah B. Hubbard, a native of this town, who died in Manchester, N. H., will be read with interest. It has never been published: Third. I give and bequeath to the New Ipswich library in the town of New Ipswich and state of New Hampshire, in memory of my sister, Helen S. Fletcher, and to be known as the Helen S. Fletcher donation, the sum of $4000, $1000 of which shall be used for the immediate purchase of books for said library. If they are living at the time of my death, I desire these books to be selected by Mrs. Harriet B. Gardner and E. C. Gardner of Springfield, Mass., Miss Fanny Barr, Miss Sarah Lee, Mrs. Martha Preston, William A. Preston and Frank W. Preston of New Ipswich aforesaid, as they were friends of her in whose memory this bequest is donated. These books to be placed on shelves by themselves, and marked "Helen S. Fletcher Donation." The remaining $3000 of this bequest to be held in trust by said library, and the interest thereon to be used annually for the purchase of books to be added to the aforesaid "Helen S. Fletcher donation." This is a verbatim copy dated the 18th day of January, A. D. 1901.
Two of the incorporators of the New Ipswich library, Mrs. Sarah E. Cotting and William Boynton, and also two of those named in Mrs. Hubbard's will to select the books for the "Helen S. Fletcher alcove," William A. Preston and Mrs. Martha Preston, have died.
James Roger diary entries
16th July 1912
Cloudy morning; nice breeze from northwest. David and Henry haying at Daniel Maynard’s. I loafed around with Sandy and weeded a little in garden in afternoon. Henry brought some cabbage plants this morning which I mean to plant tonight.
New Ipswich is lucky to have such a library and patrons who support it. I was in the library in May for the dedication of 2 benches by the Niemi family in Gretna Niemi; memory. I did not see a shelf dedicated to Mrs. Fletcher.
Do the books and shelf still exist at the library?
