Death of Miss Sarah Elizabeth Batcheller - 1909
Miss Sarah E. Batcheller who died Aug. 20 of cerebral hemorrhage, after an acute illness of three days. was a native of this town and was born April 11, 1833. Her parents were Hervey and Sally (Buchanan) Batcheller, who resided in the house now occupied by Mrs. O: H. Perry. Her father was a native of this town and her mother of Waltham, she attended the public schools of this town and graduated from Appleton Academy. She was a teacher in Woonsocket, R. I., Melrose, Mass., assistant instructor in a Boston school, and from 1870 to 1900 was a teacher in a New York city institution. She was engaged in teaching over 40 years.
In 1894 she visited Europe, and remained there 15 months. After resigning school duties, she came here with her brother Hervey and boarded at Clark's Hotel one summer, and finally became a continuous resident until about four years ago, when she returned to New York city, and, has visited here each summer with one or both of her brothers. Miss Batcheller was an efficient librarian of the Town Library for several years. Two brothers survive, Hervey Buchanan of New York city and Oliver M. of Minneapolis, Minn. The latter arrived during her
sickness. Her funeral took place Sunday after- noon in the chapel of the Homestead Inn. Rev. George Jarvis Prescott, pastor of the church of The Good Shepherd of Boston, conducted the impressive funeral service. William A. Preston was conductor. The interment was in the family lot in the main cemetery.
Hundreds if not thousands of area students benefited in one way or another from Samuel Appleton’s foresight and generosity.Those of us who attended both Appleton Academy and Dartmouth College owe him doubly. Sam was The Man.
Mrs O H Perry is mentioned in the Batcheller obit. The O H is for Oliver Hazard Perry, He operated a clothing store in Fitchburg. He was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry who fought in the War of 1812.
