William Jurian Kaula diary - Voulangis
We have found Voulangis just as Glover had described the place with the exception of those charming "peaches" that he mentioned as being common among the gentler sex. The "gentler sex" among the peasants are rather difficult to distinguish among such a motley crowd of old hags that I ever laid my eyeballs upon. They are so doubled up that they can use their nose for a plowshare when necessary. There may be good deal of poetry about the peasants and their honest toil, but you have only to see these ugly women to inspire you to swear in blank verse. Some of them find their way around by being tied to a cow who kindly takes them home after having chewed all the surplus grass from the road-sides.
*Transcriber found this entry a bit harsh!
Mr Kaula was indeed harsh but the image of the ugly old woman using her nose as a plow was hilarious.
I loved listening to this sweet young family.
