First Boy.

   Who killed Tom Roper?
Not I, said New Cider, 
I couldn't kill a spider! 
   I didn't kill Tom Roper.

Second Boy.

Not I, said Lager Beer, 
I feed a man, not kill, d'ye hear? 
   I didn't kill Tom Roper.

Third Boy.

Not I, said pale, white Gin, 
To charge such crime to me is sin. 
   I didn't kill Tom Roper.

Fourth Boy.

Not I, sald Bourbon Whisky, 
I make sick folks spry and frisky. 
   I didn't kill Tom Roper.

Fifth Boy.

Not I. said Champagne Wine, 
I at the board of rich men shine! 
   I didn't kill Tom Roper.

Sixth Boy.

Not I, said Brandy strong, 
I help men in their speech and song. 
   I didn't kill Tom Roper.

Seventh Boy.

Not I, said New England Rum,
He was almost gone before I come. 
I didn't kill Tom Roper.

Eighth Boy.

Ha! ha! said Old King Alcohol, 
Each struck the blow which made Tom fall,
And each and all who made him toper 
My agents were to kill Tom Roper.

FOURTH OF JULY AND MEMORIAL DAY.

There will be no school to-morrow
   Because 'tis the Fourth of July; 
And why is that a holiday, pray, 
   Can you tell me the reason why?

'Tis because its our nation's birthday,
   The day we resolved to be free 
From the yoke of a foreign nation,
   That lived far away o'er the sea. 

And can you tell me, mother,
   Why Memorial Day we keep?
When the children bring spring flowers
   To the graves where the soldiers sleep?

 "Tis because we love our country,
   And the boys who life-blood gave
For the love they bore the Union, 
   That we deck each soldier's grave.

Glad clouds rent the sky
On that Fourth of July,
When at word of command
 From the wise of the land, 
The bell in the steeple
Rang out to the people,
Henceforth we'll be free
From a power o'er the sea." 
"Give us freedom or death !" 
Went out on the breath
Of a patriot sire 
Filled with Liberty's fire, 
And the glad shout again, 
Said amen! and amen!.

Warm and withering. David at Store. I thinned some turnips and Alice and I cleaned up Hall in morning. I picked 4 chickens and took chickens and eggs to Mr. Barrett’s. Got letter from Hamish who is going to Troy to visit Lucy whose mother is ill..
