William Jurian Kaula diary
The autumn is at its height and the whole valley and hillsides are glowing in color. The French autumn is golden and mellow. There are but few scarlets and brilliant reds like the maples and oaks of New England. It is a perfect day, warm and sunny and cloudless. Mrs. King had planned a ride to Coulommiers, a town of importance and size which is some ten or twelve miles distant across the plains and plateau toward the east. I rode along beside the carriage on my bicycle. The road was splendid and ran through miles of open country broken only by the rows of trees that were even less numerous than usual. The farms were much larger and there were but one or two villages on the way, though we could see the church spires of many some distance away on the horizon. Coulommiers is of less importance and interest than Meaux. There was but little to see in the way of new sights. The church was old and battered as usual but was neither large nor as attractive as the cathedral at Meaux. We had dinner in a hotel and set out to see the town and as we found but little to see we concluded that the ride back would prove more enjoyable. The party was in search of bric-a-brac and found several things like copper warming pans and candlesticks. There is an old junk shop at Crécy that is just full of such things that make the customary decorations for a studio. I have invested in a few things of ancient date that will be more ornamental than useful except candle-sticks.

James Roger diary entry
17th (Saturday)
Fair and warm, wind variable. David on roads down town. I fixed sods and watered Gordon lot. Raked leaves in the forenoon, and filled Hall lamps for the expected Finn dance tonight. The Finn’s wife at Gilson Place died yesterday morning of pneumonia. Funeral at Smithville tomorrow. Got letters from Alice & May from Berkley.

Autumn day at Nussdorfer Nature Area (located across the street from Mascenic HS)

A reminder to myself to bring in the bird feeders at night.
I know that nature area since I lived at the bottom of Highbridge hill from 1942-1957. Is there a location for the Smithville firehouse?
